Almost every year My and two of my buddy's fly up to oshkosh wi. for the eaa airventure. One of the countless forums they have up there is on ultralight airplanes powered by vw engines. http://www.betterhalfvw.com/ To be certified a ultra light the whole aircraft must weigh less than 254 pounds. To make weight they take two cylinders off of the motor's and cut the unused portion of the cam and crank off. I took a few pics. I thought everyone might find this interesting. If I get tired of buggy's building one of these will be my next project. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It could loose even more weight by getting rid of the distributor and running a dual outlet coil in a wasted spark mode. The coil would be about the same size as the single coil you are already using. If you wanted to keep the points ignition you could just get rid of the top half and make a cover. |

How does the coil fire without the distributor? I know what a dual coil is, my old bike has one, but even it has points. Just curious. |

Can you run electronics on an airplane engine? If so then you could run a toothed wheel, some electronics to take care of the timing, dwell, and wheel decoding, and a GM HEI module to fire the coil. If electronics are not allowed then I guess you would have to keep the lower part of the disributor for ignition advance and points control. Huey |
