I've been watching several woodsbuggy videos on youtube while sitting in the office waiting for the housing market to recover. Something I have heard said in a lot of them is very dangerous advice for beginners. When a new guy gets fouled up on a hill and is a little crossways you always hear someone shout "grab the left (or right) cutting brake!!!" This may be the appropriate thing to do but if they are so green that you have to tell them that, then they won't know what to do next. When you pull the cutting brake and mash the pedal you trap most of your pressure to that wheel which results in only one wheel braking. When backing down a hill, one wheel braking is a disaster waiting to happen. In order to get both back brakes equalized you have to do something that is completely against your instincts. "Let off the brakes." You must let off the cutting brake and the pedal at the same time then push the pedal again. If you have to tell someone how to back off a hill (not because they can't see, but because they just don't know how) that cutting brake is their worst enemy.

Some guys will argue about this but I have seen it many times, a buggy flying down a hill backwards with one brake locked and the other freewheeling. Sometimes they make it, other times they roll. It is dangerous advice for a new guy who is probably scared already. Take it easy on the new guys, let them play on baby hills until they get their wheels under them. Show them play banks that they can run up on and practice feeling their buggies balance point as they back off. When they can raise the front end slowly and let it back down slowly they are getting close to being able to feel it anywhere. Something short, steep, and clear of any trees is ideal. The idea is not to make it up, just to run up and put just their front wheels over the edge so they get some seat time when things aren't all aces.

The problem is not getting them to release, it is in getting the other wheel to hold as well. I'm not sure how it works but somehow the pressure doesn't equalize when you let off the cutting brake. I've yet to see one that didn't do it. It may be our "hillbilly engineering" but I bet most everyone here would notice it if they were to try it.

If that is the case it is a VERY common problem. I have seen a bunch of wrecks because of it so it must not be very common knowledge. IF you know to expect it, it isn't a big deal anyhow, a quick tap of the brake and you are good. Thanks for the info! 8)

The rest of my post about new guys is still good info to use though......

You may be one of the ones that I saw in a video. Climbing a little dirt bank with a ditch, got hung, everybody screaming grab the left cutting brake, got out of the ditch and then rolled? Seems like i heard the name Tanner on the vid....I may be wrong.

You need to go back and watch and LISTEN to the video again. If you listen he was told the right thing to do. We were going to strap him off and he said NO. He had already rolled once before on that same hill. His whole reason for doing it the second time was to roll again for the video camera and he had fun doing it. By the way Tanner left is left and right is right.

I never said that what you were telling him was wrong but I was pointing out that he didn't have enough experience to pull it off without rolling. That is a good little place for him to learn and you guys are doing the right thing instead of throwing him on some meatgrinder of a hill that will get him killed. He is gonna make a good one, he's got plenty of nerve.

Go back and LISTEN ROCKROCKETS, if you understand what that means. He had every intention of rolling his buggy. We were just watching him. I'm not his teacher. You must be a miserable person, all you want to do is argue.
