Post subject:  2nd buggy, more questions....

Hello to all. I have been reading this forum and have learned alot of different things about buggies since I bought my second one a week ago. The frame is an unknown, 88" wheel base, kingpin wide 5 front axle, rear is bus torsion, tranny and trailing arms, motor was a Subaru 1.6L (locked up, broke), and wheels are a twin 5 lug pattern with welded centers. That is correct, welded centers redrilled for the close 5 lug pattern attached with nuts and washers.

Now for the questions. What other wheels will correctly fit on the close 5 pattern (I believe 112mm)? Can I redrill the drum for a chevy 5 on 5.5 pattern? How would I go about putting disc brakes on the rear? Any inexpensive places to get the front brake stuff to put back on (needed for inspection here in Illinois)? Are there any other master cylinders that will work on the vw/buggy pedal assembly for dual brakes (front and rear)? I read on here that someone lengthened their frame, but I can't seem to find the post again, any ideas? Search didnt give me any returns.

Current plans are to increase the wheel base to 96" or 100", stay w/c with a 2.8 efi gm motor and adapter, straighten out the top frame that just doesnt look right.

Will post pics as soon as I can get them off of my phone and on the computer.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

if u wanna put disc brakes on the rear you can buy blank rotors and drill them any hole pattern you want

Disc brakes are planned, but first I have to pass State of Illinois inspection. I dont know which discs to buy yet for it, but that will come in time.

The original roof was a pain in the ass when trying to get in. i'm not very tall but the front bar hit me around my nose and the roof was about an inch above my head.

Thanks for the compliments.

I am only 5' 7" so when the front cross bar is nose high, it cuts the vision way down. Not to mention I was entirely too close to the steering wheel. Plus the original roof had too much angle in it for me to feel safe in it.

Currently the tranny is a 5 rib. Hoping to score a 6 rib lilke I did the 5 rib. The original 3 rib is in the garage as a spare for now. I want to get a 6 rib super dif for it, but havent crossed that bridge yet. The original drums were close 5 with a 3 rib. Then a trip to the 'yard changed them to a wide 5 and a 5 rib. Complete with an extra set of axles and cv joints.
