Has anyone every used the vanagon trany in their buggy? I have only had my buggy for a year and half and after going thru 2 3rib bus tranys I just finished modifying a vanagon trany to work. I have heard of a couple of people doing it and just thought I'd ask if anyone has done it here. I also wanted to ask where you guys were getting the front tires eveyone on here seems to be running? Thanks for any input. |

Hey BigScott, The Vanagon transaxle is a very strong unit compared to the 3 rib. The only problem is designing a side shift linkage that will work well. Once you get past that, you will have a strong set up. The vanagon transaxle is basically the same as the famous 6 rib. What is the part number on the side of your trans? Does it start with 091 or 094? Front tires can be purchased just about anywhere. You may have to order them though. All of the tires you are talking about are Agricultural tires and can be looked up online under the corresponding manufacturers website. A good place to start would be FirestoneAG or GoodyearAG. Roy, The number is 091 301 103D2. Thanks for the info on the tires. Can you tell me the ratio of the tranny with those numbers? The linkage I bought is working great i will post a pic of it. Scott |

Where did you get that linkage? Does it work good? How much did it cost? I have access to several 80 and up traines. For cheep compaired to 78, and 79 6 ribs. Thanks Bruce |

So far it has worked great. It took a little work to get it set just right but after that I have not had to touch it. I did some trading to get the linkage and tranny but you can buy it from Davis Racing. Gary's websit it www.davisracing.com and here is the number. 765-763-7709 Scott |

The shift rod linkage deal has to come out of the side of the case rather than the inter |

Gary how much is the linkage. You stated the water boxer trans had a larger Reverse gear. I am assuming it is much stronger than the standard in most VW trans. If so I would think it would be worth the trouble. |

Yeah they are pretty tough. The shift mechanism for the w/b vanagon tranny is $250. You have to raise your shift box to get the shift rod high enough to attach it to the black hex rod deal that Big Scott has pictured. You also have to put a pillow block bearing back close to the shifter. That makes the shift rod rotate and moves that steel bar left and right. There are several of those trannies running for several years now. One guy runs a 2498cc T-1 w/dual 48's in the woods here. He absolutely abuses that tranny in the forward and reverse gears, no issues. I've driven Scott's buggy. The only thing I noticed is the shifter throw is a bit longer and the added height. Pretty smooth........... |

Is the cv flange spacing on this trans wider than an 091? If it is wider how much so? In other words, if I run 2x3 arms will it be to wide to run bus axles? |

Its ok. I went ahead and bought one anyway. I just measured it and asked over at shoptalk for the width of a regular nose shift 091. The tranmission I bought ended up having a syncro that came apart inside of it. I called the guy I bought it from and hes going to swap me as he has another one. I'm thinking I may see if he will take $50 for this trans for parts. I might rebuild it eventually. Do you happen to have a listing of the ratios in this trans or know where I could find them?
