I have an 1835 it has been fairly reliable but I want to upgrade for more power.

i think a 2180 or something around it is the best mine has been built for a long time i think 1992 and u get good power out of one to

Displacement has less to do with reliability than using quality parts and an experienced machinist and engine builder.
I've seen a 2500 last well over ten years and still run strong (on a woodsbuggy) and 1600's that lock up on the test drive.

I think Jesse is right that a small stroker can be built w/o a huge budget, be fairly powerful, and very reliable if built right.

If your 1835 is running good and not giving you problems, you'd probably be better off to get your chassis, suspension, and skills dialed in before you worry about the expense of a new motor. With the right buggy (gearing, weight, suspension, tires, steering brakes that work well) a strong 1835 will get you a lot of places, especially for a first buggy.

A very knowledgeable guy told me a good rule of thumb for aircooled VW:
1)powerful
2)cheap
3)reliable
You can have any two, but all three is not possible.

At the risk of repeating other posts, a reliable engine requires:
-new parts
-straight parts
-clean parts
-balanced parts
-parts that are in-tolerance dimensionally
-properly torqued parts
-properly broken-in parts
-proper timing
-proper octane for your compression
-carbs with the correct mixture(stoc'd)
-stay under 6000 r.p.m.
-keep the engine properly cooled (no power pulley and use stock underside tins)
-don't drive through water
-don't lend your buggy to anyone
-clean the mouse nests out in the springtime

You mean runs out of power?

What transmission do you have?
That makes a big difference.
A well tuned, not worn out 1835 on a 3 rib with shorter tires should do fairly well.

What about the 2.4 Quad 4. These are pretty peppy.. and I would guess a turbo would really make it haul.

stock 1600 dual port wood be the best in rellability if you went with full flow oiling cuz it dont have enough power to tear itself up :?

now they get million miles on those cat deisels :roll:
