I have been wandering about painting my buggy. The frame will be bare and I will need to primer and paint it as soon as I can. What do you guys use and recommend for primer and paints. The boy wants to paint it green as in John Deere Green. Myself hate the color with a passion.

spray paint. cheap 1.06 at walmart. and after the first ride the paint will be hit anyways haha i just learned all about it. then you can make it look brand new again with a 1.06 can.

powdercoat,here i can do a buggy frame basic color,thats sandblasting then powdercoat for 300.00

I might have to haul it to you one weekend. Have family over close to you in Perry County.

Tractor supply has tough paint for tractors in many diifferent colors. My fisrt buggy was painted Case orange, and it lasted forever. Looked good too!

My buggy is powdercoated and I hate it,you can't match it. If you need to repair a bar or and something you have to grind all the coating off just to do a simple weld.

N C buggy is right rattle can that sucker that way you can fix it when it needs it

I agree thats why I used tractor supply paint. You can get it in gallons or rattle cans.

I use, Dupli-Color Truck, Van and SUV paint. its about $5.50 a can. they have some pretty cool metalic colors. it holds up alright and dries pretty fast.

Hey John, If you are gonna rattle can it, AT LEAST spring for some gray or red Scotch Brite pads and some GOOD rattle can self etching primer. SEM makes a good one. We use it on structural parts that dont really show, and dont get topcaoted fully. It will make a big difference in how well that enamel bomb can paint will stick.

After you scrubby the whole thing (Scotch brite, dont push too hard if you buy red ones because they are nearly as agressive as 80 grit paper), put on some rubber gloves and blow it off while wiping with a paper towel (air only will not remove everything) and wipe it down with a wax remover and de-greaser product. If you dont wanna buy wax and de-greaser you can wipe it down with damp paper towels (To remove water soluble contaminents), then wipe it down with Windex or rubbing alcohol on a paper towel ( to remover petroleum based contaminants).
Then blast away with a medium coat of the etching primer. Be careful it will run easily.

If you put the color on right after the etching primer flashes (10 minutes or so depending on temp. and humidity, by the time you finish priming the place you started should be plenty ready for the color coat),you wont have to sand the etching primer. If you wait more than a couple hours, you'll have to lightly sand it, and reclean it.
Different primers act VERY differently, so if you use another brand, READ THE CAN.

This is FAR from the best way to prep , but most effective and quickest for a cheap and easy paint job. It actually holds better than automotive paint out of a gun. Too much film build with and too much overspray , even with an HVLP jamb gun. I learned the hard way. And its a bitch trying to keep it all wet without leaning into it while spraying.

If you are going to rattle-can it, use a hammered paint. The blue hammered looks good, but so does the gray. We use it on some of the machines that we send out the door. It also looks great on a buggy. A buddy of mine in Clarksville used it. If you want something that will hold up a little better, use the textured rattle-can. Me and Glen Primered and painted my work-in-progress about 3 years ago and I swore then and today that I will never paint another buggy. I bought some machine grade paint from Stories Automotive and it looks great, but too damn much work!! Rattle-canning is cheaper, easier, and looks just as good.

If you want a paint that will last forever and is easy to apply go with P.O.R. It requires no primer and is very durable. You can brush it on and when it dries it is as smooth as my truck. Bryan and I both have used it on trailing arms and other suspension parts. If you want more info on it you can holler at bevans37095.

Thanks Larry, I appreciate that. I was looking into some good primers to use but not knowing anything about them I was lost. I am probably going to buy two quarts of JD Green to paint this thing, since that is what the boy wants. I wish I had the frame now but going to have to wait awhile. Sunday I am probably going to start tearing it apart and getting my stuff off of this frame.

MY BUGGY IS JOHN DEERE GREEN. I BOUGHT TH PAINT AT THE FARM AND HOME STORE FOR $20 A GALLON. IT HAS HELD UP GOOD. THEY ALSO HAVE SPRAY BOMBS TO MATCH. IT IS A OIL BASED PAINT. IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DRY, BUT IT IS VERY TOUGH.

if you use the tractor and implement oil base from tractor supply, they have a hardener u can mix with it -- takes a while to dry, but it is tough

I used dupont Emron paint (industrial paint) on my buggy. It is extremely durable and it can be easily touched up with a paint brush. So far it has held up very well.

On my last buggy, I used a bunch of rattle cans and half the paint will come off everytime I washed it...

Imron is extremely tough. It also sits in your lungs and attacks your central nervous system just as strong as it bonds to your buggy. Stay away from that crap. I know 2 painters who died way before there time and they both used to spray the hell out of that stuff back in the day before fresh air breathing systems and full suits were real common. One died of lung cancer, the other from complications related to chronic bronchitis. Standard masks are no good against it. If you dont spray in a real booth, all your neighbors get to eat it too.

I guess spraying it once every five years might not hurt you so bad, but it is bad news.

I agree. It is very dangerous and can scar your lungs for life. Do not spray this in your garage. You really need to use a paint booth. If sprayed correctly with the right protection, it is a great paint. It holds up very well. I can hit the frame with a hammer and the paint does not chip. (Yes, I am sure some of you could hit the frame hard enough to chip the paint... Just an example)

The best part is you can easily touch up the pain with a litter art brush. You do not need to spray it to touch up little areas.

So fay, I have been very happy with the durability. There is one bad side, you cannot get any type of matalic mixed in with the paint.
