Terminals 85 and 86 are the coil circuit. The coil is energized with +12 VDC and transfere power from terminal 30 to 87 (the Normally open contact). With the coil de-energized the power from terminal 30 goes to terminal 87A (the Normally closed contacts). You want to use 30 and 87. |

Bill relays are used manly to take the "load" of your switch. So see if this helps 85 ground,86 +voltage from switch, 87 would be +voltage to lite or fuel pump,30 is +voltage from bat So with that said if I was hooking up high powered lites(big kc's) I could use 14or16(or smaller everyones different)gage wire on85&86 then use 12gage on 87&30 I hope this helps mudd |

Very well explained guys.. I have one connected to my oil light switch/fuel pump. That way if I roll over and lose oil pressure (it grounds the relay as well as the light switch) it shuts off the fuel pump. With the ignition on the pump does not run until the engine is cranking enough to turn the light off (and un-ground the relay). In my case, 86 (or 85 doesn't matter as both are for the coil)goes to the ignition switch, 85 goes to the oil pressure light switch. 30 also goes to the ignition switch. 87A goes to the fuel pump. Now when I turn the ignition on, the coil is energized and the relay is switched from 87a to 87. Fuel pump wil not run. As soon as engine cranks and oil light switch goes off, (relay coil is no longer grounded), the relay switches back to the normally closed 87A terminal and fuel pump runs. |

For some reason I havent had much look with those square plastic relays.
