Post subject:  Pulling double trailers?

I didn't want to hijack a thread so I thought I would start this to ask what the laws are regarding double trailers. I have a 30' bumper pull camper and would like to pull the buggy behind it on another trailer. I pull with an F-350 with a 9' dump. It's just a typical contractor small dump. My buggy is about 16' long. I would need to measure the truck. The camper length includes the tongue length. I don't even know if its legal to tow doubles like this or any length requirements. The camper and buggy trailer would total around 50'. The truck has to be around 17' so I'm pushing 70' total.

I dunno, that is pretty long combination, you know how Ohio is, they are pretty tough on traffic laws. That would work if you can get by with it.

I have seen several people pulling dual trailers but I can't help with the legalities of it. Check with your DOT office and ask them for a ruling on it. With it being that length or close to it would seem to be considered for some load escort or something if it was commercial I would say.
Seems like this came up on another board Dodgetalk.com about a year ago. I will look and see what I can find for you.
Good luck on the search.

I think it is the same story just about everywhere. I used to tow a small trailer or sometimes a boat behind my 5th wheel and never had a problem. Everytime I have ever seen it done, has been behind a 5th wheel. Im not sure about Ohio, but in Florida there is also a length restriction based on your driver license classification.

In Ky you can pull tandems at a max of 28' each I pull my camper and buggy alot together works good the overhang on the camper (behind the axles)puts the buggy on the outside of a turn so the buggy follows the same trac as the camper when you turn backing is a little tricky !

I run double tags in Tn. There is not a problem in Tn-- but the font has to have brakes and cant excede weight capacities of truck or lotal length of ?. I pull 2 16'tags behind a 99 gmc Yukon w/ buggies and am right at limit on weight.
I would go to DMV of the state you are in [or plan on going thru] and get all cleared up befor doing. Some states like NC will fry you for crossing there line with things like this!

I don't know about lenght laws. I work on the highways and see pickups pulling big campers with boats behind them all the time. I know you can pull double. Call your friendly State Patrol post they will help you out.

I will have to make some calls. The weight isn't a problem, the truck is rated to pull around 15k pounds. My camper is a lightweight under 5k. The buggy and trailer wouldn't be over 4k. It would be a train thats for sure. I did read about the Michigan law of the first trailer being a 5th wheel. They called it recreational doubles.

Sounds like you can do it. I personally wouldn't worry about being a tad over. IF you did get caught it would be a non points violation.

i dont see a statey out on the side of 71 or 30 measuring either.

It would be close. The camper and buggy trailer would be over the 40' length and the total lenth may be 2'-3' over, but I would gamble with that. I would only try this a couple times a year. My other idea is to make a ramp that allows me to drive the buggy up into the dump truck. The front wheels would be over the cab but I could winch it up there somehow. I need about a 18' flatbed now, maybe an old rollback!

Its not them you have to worry about. Its DOT that will give you a hard time. And they do carry tapes and scales in their car. Im sure you will be strapping your buggy down good anyway, but make sure its strapped down acording to how they want it done. I would do everything possible to keep them from pulling you over. Most cops and all DOT check your loads when th

Before I left my camper at D&K all the time, I had to pull doubles all the time. My bumper pull camper is 33' my truck is a F350 Quad cab, then the buggy. I do not know how long I was but came from GA., through Tenn., then Ky. with no problems. But I know you can have problems with the DOT, if you have DOT numbers on the truck. I do have a US DOT # but never got pulled over. (Lucky) DOT guys can be a$$ h$$$$ if they want to be. I would just play dumb if you get pulled over, and I was told most of the time if it is for recreational use they will not bother you. People pull into D&K all the time with doubles and triples.

Good Luck

thats weird cause the first time dean invited us down to ride last july we left hanging rock and passed a cop sitting at night and we had double trailers and no tag or lights on either one of the trailers. guess luck was just on our side.
