Post subject:  Oil cool explosion
Well today i got my motor in and after running for about a minute oil started blowing out of the doghouse oil cooler, So i took the oil cooler off and it looks like theres a small dent maybe a break but it ran for a while and i just had it tuned up with no problems. I was wondering if anyone else had any problems like this. Also i have the hook ups for a external oil cooler but have not got it yet in the mail so i ran a loop with some heater hose would this have anything to do with this. Whats you guys thoughts on this and where is the cheapest place to get a new oil cooler...
P.S. My motor sounds badass..

First of all, if you are running it with NO oil cooler at all, just a loop in the system, dont run it very long at all because you have NO cooling. I personally do not like external oil cooler, I always use the doghouse coolers, they are hidden and work very well, plus you dont have to fool with those lines every time you want pull the motor off. You should be able to buy a cooler from Drews Offroad or Larrys Offroad, or maybe Evilbay or other places on the net. I have some used ones but would hate to sell them not knowing there condition without ever testing them.

i agree with buggyman externals suck i have that with the oil filter it is a pain having to unhook that everytime and worrying about your line blowin off and not realizing it until you are locked up and being pulled out of the woods

Why not install the quick connect fittings for hydrolic systems on farm equipment! They can be found at TSC farm stores. They have check balls in them to stop flow of oil when they are disconnected! They work great!

Its been a while since I've run type 1 stuff but I remember seeing somebody swap an oil cooler off of a type IV in place of the type 1 doghouse oil cooler. If I remember correctly they had to modify the tin. The type IV one was a bit larger. If your buying one anyway you might want to look into this.

i now run external, but once dropped my motor out of the back of a dumptruck after spraying it at the car wash and it hit right on the doghouse cooler, smashed it all up, surprisingly it didnt break it. i like my external, its only two hose clamps for me to disconnect.

I use hi pressure hyd. lines on my cooler. They won't blow and they wont come off. Been there. Lost a good motor.

A couple of guys mentioned the thing style oil cooler, I have seen this mod used with no gain in oil cooling. Also, if you are considering this you may want to search for Jake Raby's research on these cooler mods. He found that either there was no gain or an actual rise in temps. I'm not knocking anyone or their ride, I just don't see a reason to do a mod for no gain. External coolers are not needed if you are simply going to make a couple of climbs and then shut down for a half hour to discuss things. You won't build enough heat in that time to need one, however, if you are going to run your motor hard for extended periods the external coolers a a good idea. Think of it this way, 1/4 VWs often run with no cooling at all, but a road course bug has all the cooling it can figure a way to put on.

i also run a bus oil cooler works good.and dont run hydrolic lines. what makes hydrolic work???? PRESSURE the fittings have real small holes to get the most pressure. pressure is good but not when it cuts ur volume down. i spun a rod bearing using hydro lines i had great oil pressure but hardly any volume.can u say starving for oil. you should have a least a 3/8 hole inside the line.

my buddies bug has hydro line on it. 2000psi and the stuff is hard as concrete but it has a large hole just like any other line. and man is it a pain to get apart.
