They take 4 ever but they do a nice job if you take your time it took 10 hours each tire on my 36 12;50 15 and i took about 8 pounds of each tire

Me and some buddies are considering throwing in and buying a tire groover. What do you guys think of this style? Tire Groover Anyone here ever use one? Mainly for the 8 ply 23 |

That is one of the best. I used a VanAlstine when I used to wrench on my buddys late model and it worked very well. Pricey for just one person, but for a shop, well worth it. |

I've grooved midget and sprint car tires with the cheaper pistol grip looking groover but never one like this. Those pretty much regulated the depth by the surrounding rubber. Are these pretty much plug and play? How about depth control? |

gary. IMHO i like the cheaper pistol grip groovers. i have used both. the one you are looking at is great for taking out big chunks of rubber but you can't get in close to the paddles because the head is to fat and the blade is in the middle. plus i like them to stay hot that one there only gets hot when you apply pressure.if you were just grooving out chunks like sprint cars it is the ticket. but for floatations and the stuff where we groove up against the paddles the pistol grip with a #8 head is the ticket. kyle |

yea the pistol grip with #8 head is about 4 hours per tire complete cutting center lugs off also. but it does a much better job IMO and is like 70.00. |

I have grooved 3 sets of firestone 8plys with a gun similar to this one. It is hard to get close to the face of the lug at first but once you get the hang of it it's not that bad. firestones have alot of rubber to move and this is the best way to do it, it heats up instantly so you can walk by and groove a lug or two any time you want. My gun is a "rema tip top" from Mohawk rubber 800-666-6464, a little over 300 a year ago, it looks a lot more modern than the "van" but is suppose to be almost the same gun. |

Had it down to about 6 hours a tire, center lug ends and all. He usually gets about 15 lbs off a Fires |

I have this one. I have a size 4 and i think maybe 8 heads. I grooved a set of 29" v-bars and Hillaholic borrowed it and did a set of 31" 4 ply firestones. I did mine over about a months time hiding in the garage drinking beer so i really don't know how long it took but Brad might have kept track on his. I have one of the $69.00 small cutting irons and they SUCK. I have cut 4 sets of tires with it and will never do another set with it. As long as there is guys like Kybuggy1jr cutting them I will just pay them. Kybuggy I did not know your son was cutting tires, or I would have let him cut them. I just had 3 sets of tires cut, (by Donnie) 2 sets 8ply and 1 set 4 ply. But I will pass the word around for you. |

Sounds like we need to have both. I have never used the bigger one only the pistol grip. It does work nice for detailing. I also have a carbide tire grinder that I love to use to smooth out the tire and for sharpening the lugs.

Yeah there is nothing easy about it but i didn't think it was that bad as long as you are not in a hurry. A buddy of mine needs a set done so he will bring his tires and his groover over and we will both sit down with a tire and work on them while tipping a couple back. They don't get done fast but they get done. If i ever get to the point of doing more than one pair every couple years ill get something better. No i didn't get the bender yet. It will probably be a while. I have a bunch of shit i need to sell and get out of the barn and then im going to buy a frame and bender at the same time. Krist told me you offered to take care of the break in on the bender. I told him to tell you thats fine just come on over any time. I think if i send it to your house ill be heading north if i need to bend any tube. 
I finally sold that truck after over a year of screwing around. I do have a bunch of crap I need to ebay so ill probably be getting ahold of you soon to give me some advice. |

Well we bought one last week. Some friends and I are went in together on a new one. Can't justify the $$ for just use in my shop. 
Need to order the flat bottom blades for it before we use it. What # blades do you and your son use Larry? Thinking we need maybe #20 or 24 The sizes are in 32nd fractions. A # 20 is 20/32nd or 5/8" Got a junk 23 |

Well I have used the Van alstin kind. There is another brand made by some company, I think it was made by Ruff. It's in a gray case and gray handle. I liked it better. It does not have the adjuster sticking out like the van alstine. It's much easier to get in tight spots and you can get blades almost 1 inch wide and over 1 inch deep . I have cut a chunk 3/4 wide by 1" deep in one pass with no problem. Both are great groovers but they are big dollar$$$$$$. And I have grooved 4 sets of 44'' swampers. |
