ok guys need advise i had a miss on #3 so i went ahead and installed new plugs.no change so i went to adjusting valves 1&2 fine got to 3&4 saw that intake valve spring on #3 was broken.what to do now do i get both heads reworked or just get the leftside done

If it's no duel spring go on and make them duel

not dual but thats a good idea its a 2175 i just wonder why it broke could it just have been a weak spring?

Dual will be better stronger your could have just gotten weak over time and broke

can the springs be replaced without removing the heads?i have never worked on heads.

Not going to a dual spring the head will have to be machined for them to work

You can get a set of hi rev springs and put on it and they will be fine... not worth pulling the heads for dual springs IMO

Yes. Remove spark plug and air up cylinder to keep valve seated. They make a valve spring compressor that will compress a spring with head still on engine.

got my high rev springs today got a late start on it today but already see the little keepers are going to be a bitch.

Would be a good idea to upgrade to chromoy keepers and retainers if funds allow it... also keep in mind that a good set of chromoly pushrods are a must with the stiffer springs because the stock aluminum WILL bend.. that is if you dont already have these parts

reno i need to do all you mentioned but like you said the funds are not there.maybe after the tax man.

I broke a retainer out in the woods long ago. Me, the supply freak, had an old head with some other break down parts hid out in the woods. Removed a retainer and some keepers and had some supper glue in the truck. 1 dab of glue on the valve guide, new keepers and a retainer installed too easy. Tap the valve stem with a hammer between some card board to break the glue and Boom I was at Grass Hill and met back up with the crowd. They all thought that I was down for the count. Jim Connell told me to watch out for CHROMOLY "Brand" push rods and keepers that are really just imitations. That's why I hate Chinese cheese. Sometime in an emergency you can take a 17mm socket on a 6" extension and strike the retainer with a hard blow with a hammer and the keepers will fall out into the socket. Better yet, hang a rag over it to catch them.

Also.Usually they bend a valve if you aren't quick to shut off the motor. You can tell by seeing that the stem is shorter than the rest. If you have a bent valve, check for valve guide slop as well. I'm just trying to learn the new guys.

thanks. and to re install the keepers, put sticky grease on them.

will try the grease trick tomorrow.also picked up a pair of tweezers to try my fat fingers dont fit between the spring compressor.

I got a friend to hold 2 screwdrivers in 1 fist, pushing straight back, to hold the spring while I inserted the sticky keepers. It ain't easy if you don't have cool tools. But you can use it as a learning experience for the woods. The hardest part was finding a friend.lol

a friend thats someone who likes to ride with ya but only comes around when your buggy is running good.

can you look at retainers and push rods and tell if they are stock or chromoly.

All the chromoly ive seen are black

and lite weight and strong for their size. kinda like midgets. Don't ever arm wrestle a midget. They will break yer arm off. Remember... they are only cod high SO! Remember ..Midgets all though small and uncalculating, they are to be considered always right.

mine are black.i dont know a lot about this buggy i got it back in july.guy i got it from said it's a 2175.with a single 36 dell carb.
