No chains came off but it took me a while to figure out to use bigger stronger bolts. The ba ychain concept is good but my junkyard parts were lacking. Bubbalowe is on the right track I think. I anticipate madmikes interpretation.

Don't look at me, I have no fricking idea what I'm doing.

Right now I'm trying to keep Cheerios's on the table and the lights turned on. I'll be happy to get my stick welded POS finished and in the woods.

All kidding aside, what Bubba has going on is fantastic, what you had going on, Marty, was fantastic, Curt and Rock as well, because it is yours. You guys saw a problem and came up with a solution, you had an idea and found a way to make it happen.
I'm toying with the idea, kinda doing some design work in my head but as far as putting anything on paper, not yet. Anything I come up with will be either completely revolutionary or more likely just a simple refinement on what you guys have already done. The ONLY thing that separates me from you is I have a machine shop at my disposal. So don't be holding your breath waiting on me.

Cool buggy! "Baby chains" are a proven design and the nice thing is they bolt right up to stock torsions and solve many problems while keeping the wheel base at 104".

Lol... thanks guys. Can't wait to get this problem sorted out so i can see how that v6 runs. My first trip only lasted about 10 seconds before things went pear shaped. (But shit it sounded good for those 10 seconds) At least i feel i am on the right track now with the chains.

Ok chaps, can't believe it has been a year since i was asking for advice, but the good news is that my project is finished ... I decided to go the baby chains route and have stolen a few ideas as i have gone along and also come up with a few of my own. I think the result looks ok. Do you guys reckon it will last? (Pics coming)

What type of caliper with the E brake?

Post subject:  Re: baby chains??¡

Nice work! It looks like you decided to
keep the final drive ratio 1:1`(front sprocket
same diameter as rearward sprocket).
While this is a "safe" design, you can get more
bang for your buck if you increase the diameter
of the rearward sprocket and go to a taller tire.
Shift revs and transmission gearing can stay
the same when the correct tire height is used.
In theory, underdriving the final drive along
with taller tires will improve clutch life (less slipping),
provide better climbing at lower RPMs and increase
launch response (based on road traction conditions of course).

The calliper is from a vw golf/ audi. It works well havin separate e brakes for each rear weel. Helps with steering.
The ratio has been reduced. It's1.4 to 1. 1st gear with the 33" tires is a monster.
Just enough speed and a huge amount of power.

Now you get to watch everyone else try to duplicate what you did. Have some fun with them, toss a towel over the arms when it's sitting, let um guess at it.
Nice work, good to see folks take pride in what they do, none of that junk yard dog crap, cheers.

Thanks guys. No, the chains aren't adjustable, however... if i put a spacer plate under the front hub assembly, it will tension it up.

It's been almost 18 months of fun and abuse and i am pleased to say that i have not had a moment of trouble! I've rolled it 3 times already and nothing has bent or broken. This thing is bulletproof!

Well done! Proves the design removes a weak link in the drive train by absorbing shock load to CV's / spider gears.
