Hi guys, I'm needing a little help here. I've built a buggy but am battling with the angle of my sideshafts. I'm running a Ford 3L V6 through a 6 rib box and and 33 inch BFG tyres. Would a baby chain setup with a ratio of 1,3 to 1 work to get rid of the angles on my cv's and take the edge off the power? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanx.

First please update you profile to include you location. Side shafts? Are you referring to stub axles? What arms are you using? 2x3's 3x3's, homemade or store bought? What CV's are you running? Exactly what problems are you encountering? Not enough information to make an educated guess.

I THINK MADMIKE CAN BUILD SOME AWESOME BABYCHAINS. THE W/C CROWD WOULD REALLY BENEFIT FROM THEM. I HAVE DABLED WITH SPROCKETS ALOT. MY 483 TRANS WITH 17 TOOTH DRIVER SPROCKETS AND 24T' DRIVEN SPROCKETS ARE JUST RITE FOR MY tsl 39.5's. BUT SPROCKETS ARE SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE CUT AND TRY. 17 AND 24 IS JUST ADDING .4 or 40%,(24 div.by 17 = 1.4),. 2nd GEAR IS EQIVALENT TO LIKE THE PULL OF A 450 BUS TRANS IF ONE EXISTED. PERFECT FOR THE OLD TORKY BUICK 3800. If PEOPLE WORK OFF THE SAME PATTERN THEY COULD SOMEDAY TRADE SPROCKETS LIKE BASEBALL CARDS. THE 6 BOLTS OF A BUS JOINT DRILLED FOR 7/16 COARSE THREAD WOULD BE IDEAL. CHANGE YOUR RATIOS IN 1 HOUR. BORE YOUR PATTERN PERFECT OR YOU WILL HAVE A PULSE WHEN YOU DRIVE. SPIN ALL STUB AXLES ON A LATHE TO LOOK FOR HOP OR WOBBLE. 1 OUT OF 6 BUS SHAFTS SEEM TO HAVE SOME IMPERFECTION.

Firstly, sorry for the lack of personal info. I'm new here and haven't figured all that out yet. Anyway, I'm nowhere close to any of you, from East London, South Africa. Now my problem is this... I'm running standard rear vw kombi suspension (tortion bar and trailing arms). I have raised my motor and gearbox and also moved it forwards to give better clearance and reduce the rear overhang, so the nose cone is now pretty much between the 2 seats. This setup is putting huge angles on my cv joints. This is why I'm looking into chains to straighten everything out. Am i on the right track? What i have found here is 1 inch roller chain and 13 and 17 tooth sprockets. I will be making new trailing arms to accommodate this new setup. Mine is not a woods buggy as you know it, but something similar. Will try to post a pic.

Welcome to the site. Would it be possible to post some pictures? True chain drives are purpose built to climb hills and may not be the answer to your question.

Welcome to the site.. I have a similar issue, I am running 5x5 arms and have a big back angle putting extra pressure on my CV's.

Chains is one way to go and you are on the right track.

I am looking at a different option. RCV performance is in the process of designing/developing a CV/Axle combination that will allow 40 deg of angle. Hopefully, their future product will work but it will not be available for a few more months.

I know that F150 cv's can go 45* but there none plunging. So from what I understand you have to run parallel trailing arms. Might be worth looking into. Just an idea

RCV Performance already has the 40 deg Non-Plunging CV joints. They are making a new "plunging" axle that will ride on a ball spline to handle the compression.

To get back to Rick's question, yes, a chain drive of some description would be a step in the right direction. In fact it might be the only possible solution to the huge angle issue you have. There are some photos of baby chains and full blown chain drives around here as well that might help your design.

I kinda had an idea that you were 'not from around here' when you spelled tires "tyres". That is a UK or EU thing but I would have never guessed South Africa. And for the record, you would win any long haul awards that some organizations have. Welcome and good luck.

40 DEGREES! THAT WOULD HELP MAKE SOME LONGER TRAILING ARMS! CORRECTION ON MY POST. I HAVE 14 TOOTH ON THE FRONT AND 24T ON THE REAR. BUT 2ND DOES PULL AS IF I HAD A 450 TRANS BY DOING THE MATH.

#80 chain seems ample. But buy good chain. Like Diamond brand. Maybe not China chain.

No chains came off but it took me a while to figure out to use bigger stronger bolts. The ba ychain concept is good but my junkyard parts were lacking. Bubbalowe is on the right track I think. I anticipate madmikes interpretation.

Once I got the good chain and poored a little oil on them they lasted a long time. They are roller chain. Mr Berns proved chains are the way to go with big motors and tires. I think they are capable of some cool fun. Jelly buggies are lightest. I like to see innovation

Put one good bearing INSIDE the driver sprocket and save about 6 inches width per side. The rear MUST have 2 tapered roller bearings if you use bus housings. The MSC book has all 4 for $126. The side load on the force pulling a wheel vs. turning a wheel is massive. My bus bearings would last about 5 rides. The combined dynamic load is 18k pounds on 2 stock bearings and 106k on 2 roller/tapered bearings. I think Mad Mike has a slide rule and scratch paper. He can make it. Mine has 21" off hiegth under the trans skid plate with type 1 beetle shafts running straight across, (no angle of the dangle) with 40 year old never broke bus c/v's. Chains are cool!

Thanks for the ideas guys. Will definitely look at all the options, but I think the chains will be the best.
Here are a fer pics of my ride. A little different to your ones but it works very well. I will post a few pics of the chains as we go along.

Cool looking little buggy. Have you tried running a 930 cv? Looks like your running a ujoint instead of a cv. Baby chains I think would give you a bit more suspension travel with the setup your running. I'd measure your axle shaft angle and see if a race prepped 930 would work. Welcome to the site. Chad
