Heres what i have going on, and i dont know much about these engines and whats best for wellsville. I have 2 motors and parts, spare motor is 8mm head bolt single port engine with intake and carb. Second is 10mm 72 1600 dual port with pic 34 and intake. Second engine has leaking valves that i need to address. I am still running a stock beetle trans and do not want to throw a bunch of money into this motor and trans, i have bigger projects coming up. I have a new top end 1641 to put in and a clutch (which is why its apart) i am not using the older motor because i was told it could be used to put a big bore kit and machined for a bigger crank and i dont want to waste it as it may be worth a little money. So these are my options, whats the best bastard to put together. Single port with the single or dual carb (after i make an intake) or the dual port. Will i get more torque from the single port. Remeber im not planning on putting a bunch of stuff to this engine in the future. im not poor i just dont plan on going that direction.

You answered your own question. The single port pulls better. But don't build it any bigger than stock 1600 or you will start going in the wrong direction.

thanks guys i appreciate it. i think ill give the single a try with the single carb. Is the 1641 gonna be pushing it? ill get the dual head done and swap them later if i have an issue.

if i use the 72 block with the single port and single carb and intake, do i need to swith the distributor for the vacuum advance. Is there any thing else i need to switch.

You asked what is best for Wellsville, take a good look around, VW aint it, they're rapidly being out numbered with water cooled anything. Do your self a favor, use that VW as a boat anchor and find an Echo or a Subie and be done with it.

Same dist. A 1600 single port has better bottom and a 1600 d/p has better top end. Anything bigger, go with d/p. Raise the comp. ratio a little and run a higher octane mix. That small motor won't be too expensive in mpg. OMG. I just said what old men told me 30+ years ago. Oh and the money you save, you can absolutely blow at Sammy's go go. Hi jesse. Scott Price (tall skinny old guy in a green Cherokee) cut that go around road. I cut off the dagger stumps you talked about. They were razor sharp. He must have made that road in the dark.

I wish i had a different powerplant but this is what i have. This was my first project and there are alot of things i would change but i would rather start from scratch and get rid off all the vw stuff. But i do appreciate the simplicity of things but at the same time it cost alot to upgrade because nothing is compatible to any other vehicle, i had to customize my own brakes or spent 500 for bolt up parts well no thanks. So im just trying to do the best with what ive got. As for watercooled well my next i have a mazda engine and trans for, but it will be 4x4 and independent all the way around, just because. Its not at all the same i know but its my own project that i havent seen done, well at least not independent.

That sounds cool, I like different/out of the box stuff. I hope to see a build on this.

Just for clarification, which Mazda motor? I hope your not referring to a rotary motor.

no its a 1.8 99 protege with a cold air intake. The reason its my next project is because i own the whole car and its a fun car to drive. Its just getting old but at least i will have everything i need. The engine will be mounted behind driver and turned 90 degrees so i have a front and rear output going to a subaru diff front and rear then down to subaru wheel and brakes and driveshafts. The gear ratio from the transmission will be dropped about 3:1 which i will change a little with bigger than stock tires, and welded diff in rear for sure but not sure of the front. It will be a small buggy and probably slow but i havent seen it built yet so why not. I will post a build but not till i have a bunch done. Cant wait.....

Sounds like a plan to me. Just making sure your not thinking on using a rotary motor. They are junk in the woods.

got it all put back together i put the new pistons in and single port heads and a pic 30 carb and it runs a lot better. the bottom end torque is nice, although i cant tell how much difference because it wasnt perfect before i took it apart. but it runs great now thanks for the advice.
