Anyone have a hookup for Optima batteries? I have a red top 34/78 that wasn't used for 5 years. Now that It's all hooked up it doesn't seem to be holding charge. Sucks that it died from years of non use, but it happened. They sell for $150 and up for that model. Looking to save some money if anyone knows a good source. My battery mount is made for that battery and I like the top and side post for mounting all the winch and car wires. No rush since it's probably down for most of the winter now anyway.

I was getting refurbished red tops for $65 from a battery supplier . They had a contract with the USPS to replace them every year but lost the contract . The dang things looked brand new and work flawless ! Sucks that that deal ended !

I just found this article. My problem could be the battery not taking voltage from the charger. This article explains it, but in essence you put a good, charged, battery in line with the charger and "dead" battery and then charge normally. Pretty slick idea that I'll try before dropping the cash.

i have done this a couple of times with regular batterys, the problem i had was my new charger wont put out any voltage if it dont "see" voltage but i have a old charger that puts out voltage as soon as it is plugged in so i hooked both up at the same time on the 2 amp settings and after about 30 minutes i unhooked the old charger and the new charger continued to charge

Great information on charging. I was about to get rid of my old red top for a core. Followed the instructions and now full charge.

Ok I had a yellow top battery that was DEAD,I mean completely dead 0 volts. Had been sitting in my garage for almost a year like this.I had tried several times to charge but charger would always run for awhile and kick off and show a error code or bad battery code or to hot code, well I just set back and figured it was a total loss.so after reading this post I put it on the charger and put jumper cables on my buggy to my red top optima and tried to charge.well it would show after few minutes 12.6 volts 100% and start to just maintain a charge so I thought I'd leave it on for awhile.well after several days nothing and charger would automatically kick off after so long and I'd reset it.well so I said forget it this crap don't work and just turned it on one last time to make sure cause a yellow top gel battery ain't cheap.well I go back out several days later and my charger is off, like completely off.so I check the extension cord and sure enough it's been unplugged.guess my brother or nephew had unplugged it.( benefit of being next door neighbors ) well I plugged it back up and the charger now reads 6.4 volts.the yellow top drained my red top through the jumper cables.so I started charging again and now after almost a week of slow charging it said 100% charge this morning,so now let's see if it will hold it.I hope so cause that's a lot of coin to be saved. Chad

I had a similar problem with mine when left sitting for awhile and tripping the breaker in the charger. One downside of WC w/ECMs. They are a constant draw on the battery. Use a typical cheapy 6/12volt charger as I find my expensive electronic charger does not play well with these types of batterys. Anyways start charging using the 6 volt position. Leave it charge overnight and it will bring the current draw down into an acceptable range to the switch over to 12 volts to finish the job. Works like a champ.

I used a good battery in series with my "dead" red top and let it go at 2 amps for about 10 hours. The red top was showing 8 volts at this point. I unhooked the good battery and ran the charger at 2 amps for 3 days on the red top. It's been showing 12.68 volts since. Seems to have worked. Of course with my luck I'll drive it somewhere, shut it off and come back to click, click, click!
