So right now I have a buggy with a 1641 dual port, 3 rib, bus torsion, blah blah the usual. I also have a 2004 WRX sitting in my driveway. I bought it in oct 2010 as a daily driver, but now I drive my truck 95% of the time since I'm back home. So I have a 280 whp fuel injected, turbo charged flat four sitting in front of me with everything to make it run (car runs and drives perfect right now) How much woulkd it cost to transplant that motor, turbo and all, into the back of my buggy? Where can I get the adapters, flywheel, clutch, etc. Also how long is that 3 rib gonna last behind it? If you can give me a list of pros and cons for doing the conversion, and maybe an estimated cost to get it on the trail if I do all labor myself. I owe $8k still on the subaru but fawk it :twisted: Let me know whatcha think, and how hard this is gonna be. Thanks guys

Sell the Subie, I personally would drive it but I would have a bunch of tickets. The turbo isn't the way to go in the woods, very little grunt at bottom end and that motor doesn't come alive until 3500 rpm. The 3 rib will self destruct should you hit boost and leave the ground. For the 8K you owe you could buy 5 normally aspirated motors AND all the parts to do the conversion. Kennedy mfg. has all the clutch and mounting plates. Also, the last I heard, 2002 is the last inexpensive motor to do the wiring on, somewhere around $400. Don't know if that has changed or not. Small car performance can do up to 2010 but it's almost $800 to have it done. Your on the right track, just in the wrong direction. When you do a water cooled conversion all of the parts associated with it needs to be the best you can get 930 drive line parts, built 6 rib, arms, yadda, yadda.
Now if you wanted to build a street rod then I would have a slightly different answer, Mustang eater, Camaro eater, Corvette eater.

He is right if you can't stand to look at that sweet car sell it and buy something missed up so but running.

I started with about what you have and with selling and trading for stuff I didnt need and buying what I did (shipped to my door even the motor) I done my swap for around 1800 out of pocket. If you was to pull a motor and walk the junk yards for parts you need you could even do it for less.

If the ins. Is payed up and the book value is worth what you owe then I'd accidentally park it beside a tree that just happens to fall across the roof and smash the he'll out of it :shock: ,lol.then buy the car off the insurance agent for the motor.no I'd sell it before I'd part it for 8 grand.you'd come out whole lot better this way IMO.Chad :mrgreen:

best ting you can do to get out and have some fun is either keep what you got and drive the hell out of it ir go on and build you a big motor and get a 6 rib trans you put a wc on the back you will have your weight off and it def wont hold up to that 3 rib i say run what you got yo uwil do alot with it or build you a 1835 and you will have all you need

I too agree with selling the car. You can pick a Subie 2.5 SOHC motor for around 1400.00. The WRXs a low compression 2.0 motor and as mentioned suffers from no low end torque that you need in the woods. If your going to run a turbo in the woods you need a 2.5 with 10:1 compression and low boost. That gives you the low end torque and extra power when needed. Did I mentioned it's a Pain In The ASS to get tuned well! But if your a glutten for punishment go for it! :roll: :mrgreen:
