I am stuck in a dilemma and looking for your input...

Many of the parks and clubs around here require 4 wheel drive and I am currently collecting parts to make my buggy 4 wheel drive. However, I now have access to a CJ7 jeep that I can rebuild into a trail rig..

The CJ seems like a simple answer but I have a few issues..
- More money to rebuild and fix
- My Rubicon would have a hard time towing CJ7 (Unless I flat tow)
- Wife is having an issue with Two projects in the garage

I really like the idea of the 4x4 buggy. I think it would work very well if I can keep the weight down.

What are your thoughts...

I am a fan of the 4x4 buggy for stability and safty reasons. As well as the fact I have not seen it done and love that  And yes I voted Dan

why not just do a mild build on the rubicon and wheel it.I had a yj with a tpi350, axles and lockers and was a showed up by nearly stock rubicons.build it right and try to keep the beer intake to a minimum and you could still drive it daily.

You know I love the " outside the box" stuff.

I love my rubicon and I have done a few things to it.. Tires, suspension lift, intake, bumpers, winch and lots of skid plates. However, the Rubicon is still my daily driver, Tow Vehicle and recovery vehicle.. I also have a bumper to bumper lifetime warranty on the Jeep.. I cannot make that many changes without voiding the warranty..

The Rubicon is do-able untill you are driving several hours from home to ride. Its a long tow truck ride home if you break.

I say leave the Rubicon just how you have it. Sounds like it is just beefy enough to go in and get the buggy when the beer intake is above nomimal and buggy functionality is below nominal. As for 4x4 on a buggy. You figure out the hard stuff so we can follow in your footsteps. Like Neil Armstrong on the moon! 8)

met a guy from northeren georgia few years ago. he was saying same thing about the 4x4 thing. he mounted a gear around the front brake drum the had a plate that he mounted a starter to. when asked to see his 4x4 he would hit button engaging the starter. poof its a 4x4. then when in trails he would remove starter and ride. seemed like cheap easy way to get around the prob to me.

It looks like the 4x4 buggy is going to be the winner.. :D :D :D :D

Should not be that hard a build.. Already have the 094 Trans.. An 094 is a 091 (six rib) with a driveshaft that comes our the nose cone.

As for the front, I am planning on getting a SVX rear diff and use the front arms, struts, knuckle and brakes fron the SVX front.

I will keep you posted when I start the build.

ok, im gonna throw this out there....what about hydraulicly drivin front? not an engineer here so i dont know what it would take but could be driven off motor, pressure left to circulate freely when wanting to run it like a buggy and could be directed to the hydraulic motors when needed? not sure but i think it would be lighter overall than an axle, like i said, just athought

Sherman has all the stuff gathered to do just that to his chain drive.
