I don't know if you can get it out there but we use Bilt Hambers' Surfex HD for everything these days, fantastic stuff, cheap too.

Zep formula50 is by far the best I have used. We have a parts washer with zep in it at work. I like it better and use it more than the solvent parts washer. You can put parts in it and let it run across them. They come out without any oil stains on them. I put the transmission case out of my wife 78 Jeep CJ and it took me less than 5 minutes to clean the transmission after letting it run for a while. When I brought it home she asked me where I found her a new transmission case.

Its more than likely has the under coating on it,your gonna need kero or #2 to loosen it

Autozone delivers a 20 gal drum of Zep to work so I'd assume you can get it from them in smaller amounts.

Screw all that cleaning, just get it sandblasted.
Drill and tap the vent hole for a 1/8" pipe plug, you can seal up the shift rail and input shaft with rags and duct tape. For a nice job you'll just have to do a little hand cleaning around the input, shift rail and pull the flanges to clean up behind them.
With some new nylock nuts and a little attention to detail you can make it look like a brand new one.
