Chad I think he is trying to figure out if he will be able to run 2nd gear on hill climbing. Not just if it would be a lower gear for trail riding. At least thats how I interpreted it.

ya i want to climb in 2cnd but dont want to build a trans geared for that then not have enough power to pull 2cnd cause then 1st would be way to low to climb in to and 2cnd would be to high for hill climbing. i got a 2 seat beeline polly seats gas tank battery dry sump tank thats about all the extra weight besides the chassis with 4 ply 23 degree flotations on alum. beadlocks

if your building it for climbing then id say its not going to weight that much more, maybe couple hundred pounds.id say it would have the power probably.that be like a 330lb guy like i was in a s/s,lol.chad

It will NOT pull it on moderate to bad stuff. You could drive it around just fine probably, but a 2332 just wont pull the gear for hillclimbing. Might "shoot" short straight hills with that combo, but thats about it. A taller first , like a 3.44 (or even a 3.33 if you gonna try to keep it light.), with a decent 2332 will do 10 times better than a 2nd gear trans with a STOUT 2332.
I know its hard to believe that 6mm of stroke would make that much difference in the torque a motor can make and what the optimum gearing for that peak torque range is, but the difference is unreal.

And keep in mind (you may already know this but)..... when you build a true 2nd gear trans, you gotta buy a different r&p too, among other things, not just a gearset. Its about twice as expensive in parts.
No way I would build a 2nd gear unless a 2500 is in your VERY near future.

Smitty used to run a 2nd gear transmission with his 2276, but he has a very strong engine, I would pm him for that particular question....

What is the gearing in a second gear tranny? What gear ratio are you running in yours Larry? Just curious what the gear sets are that give it this second gear to run in and how does it compare to a stock 3 rib second gear ratio? Just wondering if anyone can answer this for me.Chad

My opinion is that a well built properly matched 2332 could pull a 2nd gear trans no problem,AS LONG AS THE TRANS WAS BUILT FOR THAT ENGINE.

Some run a 2.46 some run 2.36, there is a fine line between both of them, I have heard some say 2.36 is a little too fast and uncontrollable, some likes it better than 2.46.....

If I was building one I would go with the 311 first 236 second because u can use a 543 r p and pull second or if it is to high for the hill u can still use first Another good reason for these gears is if u brake r p and u can't another one then u can go with a 456 and run first gear and not be but a couple mile per hour slower than ur second with the 543 r p

i think the only ring and pinion weddle offers for this is 5.14 which is a little higher than the 5.46 but i can go with a 246 2cnd and a 5.14 ring and pinion with a 2332 do you think it will pull it good enough to climb with i want to stop at the bottom and launch it in 2cnd what does my final drive number in 2cnd need to be to do this. with the 5.14 and 2.46 it would be 12.6

I run a 002 trans with a 2.46 2nd gear and a 5.38 ring and pinion. Im running a 2500 now and pull it with no problem. Im going to put my 2386 on and feel sure that it will pull it fine to. The 5.14 is still gunna be a little tall in my opinion.
