For Christmas, my sister in law gave me the movie "Dust To Glory". It was an awesome movie highlighting the Baja 1000.

Has anyone ever competed or even attended the Baja 1000?

I have now added to the Baja 1000 to my bucket list.

I have never been there or seen the movie. I was told i should do both. For your bucket list, do you mean attend baja or compete. My bucket list has compete in the baja and the pikes peak hill climb. Also Targa New Foundland is in there. (google it)

If you like that movie you need BajaFlo 2. Woo Its wicked but only TT. Thats only sucky part. The really young guy Andy McMillian just won the 09 baja 1000. He drives a TT now. And him and Gordon were battling the hole race. Robby ended up finishing like 5th or something CAUSE HE SUCKS. Sorry. 8) .

I was invited to be part of the chase team for some buggy team for this last 1000. I didnt have enof funds for the trip tho. I want to run the Vagas to Reno race. But my cali buddies say its funner to do the pre-running. Its like a party more than race. Ive been invited to that too. Or ride in my buddies buggy.

Boys if you like the baja stuff make sure and put glamis on your wish list!!! I'll go with you! I WILL go in the next 3 years. I hope to go to Lil Sahara this year atleast once! CAMELS!!! 8)

Can you even run a woodsbuggy? I have no idea what class that would be.

My goal is to run the 1000 in the next 5 years and then return with each of my three daughters when they turn 16. Kind of a right of passage..

So far, my wife is cool with the plan but I am sure she thinks it will never happen.

Yes you can run whatever.

Class 1 - Unlimited suspension, Unlimited motor - Average buggy price - $800,000.00
Class 10 - Unlimited Suspension, Limited Motor to 2,000cc.
Class 12 - Limited suspension (cant remember how much), Limited motor (cant remember)
Plus allllll the safty stuff you have to have.

Then there are classes less than this too but I dont know them....

I hate to tell you but a baja 1000 trip would be serious money. Many of the racers have $100K cars and dont finish... $1mil TT and dont finish. I could tell you I have never built a buggy that would survive the 1000. Infact I couldnt name one buggy this side of the MS River that could survive the race... If you wanted to do this you would need a spare part or two of every part on your car including tranny and motor. Many tires. And a vehical that can go on the corse to save you when you break down and stuff. Man the baja 1000 is one the toughest races on earth. I will prolly never be able to afford the race in my lifetime. OR own a buggy that could do it.

Id love to run it but it costs an insane amount of money. Even a lower class by the time you figure in travel, fuel & parts plus entry fees & stuff youll probably blow through 5 grand. Ive tried to get to Glamis for years & kept running into the same problem. A few of us were planning to split the expenses & we were still looking at 3K each to spend 2 weeks out there. That was back when gas was a buck. Its amazing how fast it all adds up.

5k wouldnt touch the 1000....
Not trying to bash. Just saying

I met a guy when I was out there that runs a baja bug. He had 20K in a 1600 cc natural asp. motor....
That guy was cool as shit to. He was like see that chick sitting at the end of the bar, thats ashley tell her I said to take you home with her and show you her cali tricks.... wait thats another topic story haha

Buggynut, Lets go to glamis for halloween. Your right. Prolly be a 3 or 4K trip for a week.... Prolly 2K in fuel.

Trust me, that 5K is assuming you have a complete ready to run rig that can handle the punishment. Your tow vehicle would double as the chase truck & you need a lot of luck. You dont think 5K would cover a week there including fuel?

I have a set of combo spindles that ran Baja once & were removed. They made the entire distance but the bronze bushings are hammered. Thats from one race with a brand new part. Thats the punishment the whole vehicle is taking. BTW I need to find somebody to fit new ones before they go on my rail.

Thanksgiving is the time to visit Glamis. 200,000 people show up some years. I would still love to make the trip. Ill have to see how this year goes. I have an insane amount of work left on the new rail & this year is in question. If you are serious about going Ill find a way to make it even if its 2 years from now rather than this year. I need to cross this one off my list.

Yea 5K might would do it if you had all the other stuff. I was including extra parts, chase rig parts, tires wheels etc etc.

I don't know about making glamis this year but maybe next. You want to go to lil sahara?

Thats only a few hours from Emporia, KS where I drive to every week. For years Ive been trying to figure out a way to get a buggy out there in my trailer but then I need a Ryder truck & trailer to finish the trip. Id love to take a trip there but its going to depend a lot on getting the rail finished first.
