i have an alternator with an external regulator i just put a new regulator on recently because my light was staying on well i started it up and the light still stayed on so i switched alternators with the same new regulator and the light did not come on at all with the key on and not running, so then i switched regulators again and the old one let the light come on but wouldnt go out with the motor running any suggestions
thanks

What color are the wires (from the reg to the alt) and where do you have each one connected?

ok the wires from the regulator are red green black the wires from the alternator are white green black these are not the original wires i have dpositive dnegative and df ,d positive is the green wire it has two wires one to the regulator one back to my idiot light then to the ignition it goes to the red wire on the regulator the black one to d negative and the white was on the df my other regulator is a 4 wire regulator and this new one is 3 but i did not use the 4th one on my other regulator i have a generator to with the d+ d- and ground could i hook up this regulator to that maybe it is my alternators they are from the stock car the brushes look good but maybe my windings are cracked and is jumping circuit or somethin also will the genrator charge my battery if hooked up correctly

Try it this way (coming from the reg to the alt):

The red goes to D+
The green goes to DF
Black to D-

Now if you ground the light it will come on, correct? (it should)
If so, then tie this into the red wire.
Once you start the engine, the light should go out.

If this does not work, you may have the wrong reg (or a bad one)

I would take the reg (first) to a repair shop and have it tested. If it is ok, then I would take the alt....
