I bought a Hi torque starter for late model Beetle with Diesel and automatic,,did a little grinding on the bolt holes and it fits perfect and whizzes my 3.3 Suby engine like crazy. You can buy the Bosch VW TDI,, make sure it has 9 teeth and has counter clock wise rotation (CCW) for automatic, It is smaller,,lighter,,and much more powerful than the early auto starter I was using.

This is good to know but can you give us some more info. What year beetle? I looked up 1997 beetle and it looks like it has 10 teeth. Then I looked up a 2000 and it has 9 teeth but 3 starter holes. What all did you clearance? Did you just make the two bolt holes bigger?

I just had to pull apart my high torque starter and clean the contacts and grease it up to get it working again. Not sure how much longer it will last.

That is IT,,,I actually bought mine from a diff person,,,this is the one I talked to him about but he upgraded to the one just like above,,,

call him and tell him you want the one like this but 2.0kw,,9 tooth,,ccw. I asked for a number but he has not got back yet,,or just get the one you found,,,or go to pullapart,,,,compare numbers,,,
you need to elongate the bolt holes, I used the 3rd bolt hole for my ground,,sad grinding it voids warrantee ,, Im off to New Mexico for class,,will try to log on out there,,,good luck,,,,,I love the starter,,it is wicked.

Also very important,,,,I use a THREE RIB BELL HOUSING

3 rib on mine,,a better way to get corect bolt holes may be to plug existing ones with press fit or screwed in plugs and make a template from a slice of an old mounting and drill new holes,,that would be a neater fit,,however the new starter is identical to old starter in self centering flange.

PLUS IT IS A GEAR REDUCTION STARTER,,I SWEAR,,,I CANT WALK PAST MY BUGGY WITHOUT STARTING IT,,,TO BAD IM IN NEW MEXICO :wink:

Man that's cool. I'm glad you got it worked out. If anyone wants to use a 6 rib bellhouing, you could have .250" milled off the starter surface to do this. Guys have been milling them down to use the regular old bug starter for a long time.

For the first time in years ,,this past weekend at Stony Lonesome my starter whizzed my buggy to life every time I hit the switch. I listened to lots of starters and none spin faster. :wink:

Why nut just press a piece of solid al stock in the hole, then drill? YOu are just trying to fill in the little bit of overlap to take up the slack, right? The piece will stay in there anyways. Or even get it tigged into the hole and grind it smooth, then drill.

I thought you already had one of these starters on your buggy? Is it kickin loose or something (Cuz you reamed the bolt holes)??

I do have one on my buggy and it works great. I am doing another and I just want it to be a neater job. I thought about pressing in a plug but was afraid it would be loose when I drill half of it out and I am trying to figure out a way to do it without tig. My macninist is threading me some plugs now but I would like to fine a ready made bolt. The threaded plugs will be JB welded in,,,or locktite. This is just a cosmetic effort that should take out the guesswork of wollering out the holes.

the existing bolt holes are the right size for tapping with 9/16-12 tap:

Bolted on the Firebug Mod TDI starter last night to test it out on a hi compression application for Marty. Lined up perfect and bolted right up. Even the lug for the starter wire was same threads as IMI starter nut 8) . GOOD JOB Marty!

It seemed to crank maybe a hair slower than the IMI at first, and was kinda "dry" sounding. But after two quik start n shut downs (no heat in engine yet) it seemed to crank faster and sounded better. Then I cranked it without turning on ignition for a good 30 seconds, it never slowed a bit and did not get excessively hot to the touch. Fired up the motor let it idle about 3-4 minutes to warm it a little, turned it off and started it in 2nd gear up on jackstands....cranked right over. I know thats a short term test, but seemed to work as well as the IMI so far. I think you done good Marty!!
No test is good as woods test, so we'll see how it does this coming weekend crankin up 13:1 on an engine thats been running long enough to get pretty hot. I got a feeling it will be fine. :wink:
