They are good for 200- 250 starts. A good factory 091 is good for thousands. California Crap and Chinese cheese. |

I had one that was 5 years old then I sold the buggy 4 years ago, still works like new. Probably put it into some Frankenstein junk yard POS. Throw a set of baby chains at it, that will fix it. |

I got one that was burnt up when i got my buggy..paid $100 to have it rebuit..it was just a badass starter..now its laying in the back of my truck next to the 3 rib it was on(nothing wrong with it).. now im running a 6 rib with a factory starter and I really think this factory starter works just as good as the hi-tork..i didnt put it on the 6 rib because i was told it wouldnt work on a 6 rib..I did like the hi-tork tho ! |

I've had mine for 6 years its been on a few 3 ribs and now its on a vanagon midshift love it no issues however i haven't counted the starts last time could've been #199 fingers crossed |

Mike. I have not said , wrote or thought an un kind word to you. This site is not for bashing people offensively. The IMI factory guy from the shop told me 1. Too much torque can twist a bell housing and mis align the flywheel and starter gear and they pop off too easy because all they have is a snap ring. 2.Older ones had 3 too small allen head bolts that would woller out their aluminium holes. 3. Water gets behind the solinnoid cover plate and corrodes the contacts. When you go to crank, the bad connections sizzle. I ride 2-4 times a week. I do a lot more cranking than most. The Passat starter is a 17 year old grease ball factory starter and works superb. My 2 a/c's have corrosion issues with IMI. I'd suggest to people to rtv the 3 screw coverplate after they dry it out and sand all contacts. The Buick V6 3800 ate the most IMI starters with all the problems. I know there are some people out there that have had issues also, but don't want to stick their heads in this issue. I originally started this post to seek out others that have had starter problems. |

I could see it happening in under certain circumstances for example its getting dark your broke and mad about it say something like a distributor broke because you was being a dumbass trying to get those few more feet of a run up a hill and back into a stupid tree limb you didnt see sticking out so you use the starter to pull the buggy on the trailer not that this has ever happened to me but mine survived I mean that guys did yeah |

Hi Philip. The torque of the V6 engine while driving. Hello Mike. Anytime you see a post that says passat2800, click on down to the next. And to the rest of y'all. I've been running these IMI starters for 14 years. If yall ride as often as I do you WILL have a some burnt starters laying around at $200+ each. Maybe some of you are right about the longevity of yours. You can't burn up a starter turning a wo out motor.lol. I'll try the rabbit diesel starter next. |

Well lets try a bit more math here shall we, how much can the crank bolts with a, what ~40mm or less radius/lever arm take compared to 3 starter motor bolts at 200-240mm radius? And yet the outer ones are snapping or opening up the ally? Methinks perhaps they were already loose... |

The problem there being all those high-torque gear reduction starters are built from the exact same base Denso, Mitsubishi and Hitachi starter units that are used in hundreds of millions of other production cars and they never have an issue...and I've used dozens of 'em with no issue, some of which are well over a decade old and still working fine... |
