1835 vw, my voltage will spike to 18 plus volts, might run normal at 14v then rapidly jump to 18v. It might be normal for 10 minutes, then spike for 5 to 10 minutes. I've checked and cleaned all terminals. On my alternater there is a device mounted to the top I assume this would be the regulator, removed from my alternater cleaned, brushes looked good, also noted diodes. What would think the problem most likely is the alternator of this unit on top the alternator?
Thanks

My alternator is a Motorola, is it worth taking the chance at purchasing a regulator for $50.00 or should I purchase a Chinese product?

I suggest checking all your grounds making sure everything is grounded properly.
