I have a 4500 winch and it has a hand swich/relay I had on on my buggy all last year and never needed it I used it once in the spring and then the next time I needed it. It was broken I was thinking rust or something turns out the bar that push across the bolts melted and fell off. I had a new one that had bigger gage wire so I put it on and now same thing. Only used it on a 15' pull in the woods and once last weekend pulling it on the trailer.

Anyone ran into this? Im think of trying to find some type of relay for a biger winch and wiring it up on a 3 way switch.

Any ideas on a relay or something else I should do? I dont need this on top of needed it in the woods:twisted:

You need a 12VDC magnetic Contactor rated for the current draw of the Winch motor.

On my 5000# winch I used 2 gauge jumper cables for the leads 53, 54, 64 and 65.
For the switch I used a McMaster Carr # 7172K25
Number of Circuits 1
When Switch Is
Left Circuit, Is Off or On
Right, Circuit Is On or Off
Switch Action Springs Back to Center
Number of Terminals 3
Industry Designation SPDT (ON)-OFF-(ON)
Amp Rating at
125V AC 15
28V DC 20
Toggle Height 0.69"
Additional Specifications Washdown Switches
Three Position—Switch is Off in Center Position
I mounted the toggle in the dash, ran two 16 ga wires to the coil terminals on the solenoids mounted in a waterproof box.
Summit sells other solenoids that are more self contained.

Hopefully the pdf works

This is the breaker I put on my buggy. Granted, my winch is a 9500 lbs..
