 Post subject: Charge light question

I just swapped out my gen for a IR alt. Ran the B+ wire to the battery (used 6g wire ). Ran the D+ wire from my ignition toggle to the D+ post. Charges but will not shut off with toggle. Went to local hardware store and bought a 12v light. Wired it into the D+ wire. Light comes on and stays on and alt does not charge. Take light out and she charges fine but don't shut off. Now here is the real kicker.... Took the D+ wire off all together and the alt still puts out 14.2V ??????? I know it takes voltage to make voltage. Anyone have any ideas????

Ok. I hooked the wires back up this morning. When the light is wired into the D+ wire and the ign switch is on I only have 2.2v getting to the alternator. Why am I losing voltage?

I hope this helps.. BTW.. Do you have an idiot light in the circuit on the D+ side. It will not shut off without the light in the circuit.

No it's not an led. I have the buggy wired just like the pic. I checked ohms across the light. I got 26 ohms. Is that enough to cause that much voltage drop? I put a toggle in place of the light so I can shut the buggy off. Ill use that till I figure this out. I'm not sure why I'm getting the voltage drop

When I first got my buggy I had to add a idiot light the previous owner didn't put one and I found it would only charge half the time without one, as for the not shutting off I would think it has something to do with your ignition switch, either bad toggle or something wired up wrong, hope u figure it out soon, I hate wiring and its usually something stupid right in front of you that the problem, good luck

It doesn't charge at all with a light in. The voltage is dropping to 2.2 volts after the light which is not enough to make it put voltage out. Do I need a special light?

The alt only needs a momentary bump of voltage to charge if u got power going to it at all times it won't charge the d+ side does not need power all the time I got mine hooked to a push button

So I can just hook it to the push button and the power it gets while cranking will be enough? Can I still run the idiot light if I do it that way? Thanks for the great help :mrgreen:

Actually it should be on its own push button I meant to say that I have mine on a Seperate push button sorry :)

I see. I have my B+ wire on a toggle. So What your saying is I can turn the power off to the B+ wire once the buggy fires up?

Lol yea D+ thats what I meant. Thanks for the help. I carry around a meter and check to make sure its charging a lot so I dont need a light. :mrgreen:

from what i have read that you need a positive feed to jump the alternator to start charging and start feeding the idiot light with positive current , this causes the light to go out. basically all the light does is let you know, if the light comes back on, only if your alternator quits charging or turning in case of a belt breaking.
and if the belt breaks you could over heat the engine.

Yes always good to run one so you will know if your belt breaks. Also you have to have it hooked up to a 12 volts that's how it knows how many volts it's making. When it comes on it has grounded it self out.

The best way to do it is to connect the excitor post of the alternator (small lug) to the accessories on a key switch. The excitor needs to be on a seperate switch than the igintion (ignition on ignition of key switch and alternator on accessories).

If the alternator and ignition are on the same switch the alternator output voltage will keep the ignition energized even with te ignition switch turned off.

If you really don't want to put a key switch on you need a seperte toggle to excite the alternator but you will have to remember to turn it off. If you use a push button I don't think the charge light will come on if the belt flies off while the engine is running.

in theory it should come back on if the belt comes off once the alternator stops because the + will revert back too a - , there for the light will come on. :idea: :mrgreen:
