Tested my alternator tonight after trying to go for a ride around the yard. It is charging but not by much. 12.47 volts just battery with the motor running its jumps to 13.54. Shouldn't it be more around 14.5 or higher on volts?
Idiot light never came on, just hard starting.

13.54 is fine as long as it is consistent when you add loads like headlights to it. You may have an issue with the starter.

If the wife wouldn't kill me I would go check it out now. But it's 11:34pm so I don't think her or the neighbors would like me starting the buggy. I have out my battery on the charger over night soit will have a good charge. Will check starter wiring and all that inthe morning too. Thanks!!!!

a rusty crusty connection on the hot wire on top of the alt. if the idiot lite just barely glows then 1 of the 3 diodes is burned out.my guess.Maybe china can send you another f'ed up one. We all eat out of their hands anyway thanks to the American businessman.

Starter is the problem, took it off and went to test it. The bearings inside are gone shaft wobbles all over the place. I hate electrical problems.

Is it a stock vw starter? is it a auto or standard shift starter? cause if its a standard shift one they will wobble and the bushing could be bad in the bell housing causing it to bind and turn hard.

It's an auto, after thinking about it for awhile I was thinking the same about that brass bushing. It turned slow on the tester. Going to check the bushing in the bell housing. In the morning. Otherwise it's $40 for another starter.

Those auto zone starters are worthless. get a starter from an automatic bus or bug.

I believe it is an auto starter. Bushing is in the bell housing so the starter did crap out on me. Going to order another starter it should be here Wednesday.

They are referring to a vw automatic starter that does not use the bushing, they are much better than the straight shift starter.

I would bite the bullet cry once and buy a high torque starter. You will never buy another. The only thing that needs replaced are the contacts

16300 is for the automatic trans its self supporting....... 16450 is for manual trans needs supported via the bushing
