Post subject:  alternator conversion? What's cheapest route?
wantin to upgrade to alternator from my old generator and from what I've read the 12v alternators won't work with the original generator stand? Said something about difference in offset between alternator and generator on Chircos. Would just like to confirm this by some of you all that know. I'd like to try and upgrade to alternator as cheap as possible and was wandering if I could just buy 55amp alternator and get it to work with the stand I already have. Thanks

you can grind the front off your old one but they are only $20 or so new and you can find them used on line sometimes. or at a car show. if you want to cut it just cut the front of the holder area back even with the stand till alt sits level. the alternator front is what hits. its time consuming but can be done. still easier to buy alt stand and be done with it. JMO

not sure about going cheap...i went to k1 warehouse online and ordered a kit with a new bosch alt ,stand,belt etc....they(k1) also has options for cheaper kits....one has reman bosch and also empi is a choice but i wouldnt go with the empi

I know it's an older thread but just now gettin the chance to FINALLY update the piss poor charging system I've been dealing with the past few months :x I've had so many other things to work on lately I kept putting this off. The charging indicator light wasn't visable hardly in the daytime but definitely is at night. Could partially be to using all the lights at night and drawing more current but the light would stay just faint & dim unless you throttled it then it would glow brighter. I've been workin around it by just puttin it on the charger once every 2 weeks or so. So I went ahead and ordered a 55 amp alternator & picked up an alternator stand as well instead of trimming the stock one. 55 amp should be plenty to run what I've got surely?? Pretty simple setup, 1600 with electronic ignition, oil/charging indicators, oil pressure gauge, (4) 27w LED floodlights and a PYLE cheapo MP3/radio. If this 55amp by some reason wont run what I've got I guess it's too late now :?

oh good call I forgot to add I've got an Alba electric fuel pump. Not sure how much it draws though. That's good to hear HPfreak, it'd be nice for it to actually charge the battery for once!!

Look on eBay my buddy just bought a 1 wire for 100 bucks brand new minus the pulley and stuff but if ya have a good pulley and everything that's a good price

i got mine from autozone for $72. i got it for a 79 bug. it has a $11 core. i took my old generator back for the core. it also has a lifetime warranty. it has a 55 amp output.
