just put another motor on my buggy and its practically identical setup as what I was previously running but its a different generator and external voltage regulator. also this is an electronic dist instead of points. I've been looking at countless wiring diagrams and have had no luck. buggy starts fine with key and hot wire to dist and coil are only hot with ignition on. and black wire from dist is hooked to negative side of coil but when it starts you can turn key off and it continues to run and I gotta pull coil wire to shut it off... the 2 wires from generator are hooked directly to regulator. Any ideas? I know its a pretty simple fix but electrical gremlins aren't my strongest point... :? possible grounding issue?

just another guess. is the ignition hot wire wired into the accessory post of the key switch or you are getting power onto the wire by stray voltage. Follow it with a test lite or volt meter until you find current with the key off.Start at the key switch back.Other than that your alternater is wired so it feeds the coil continuously.

test with a meter across the batt terminal and ign terminal on switch and make sure it breaks the circuit.

i had the same problem. i ended up hooking the wire from my alternator to the acc. side of my ignition switch so it isolates it from the ignition when the switch is off

Put a diode in the circut that lights the alt light. The alt is feeding back or if you have and electric it will do it too

Like i said electrical stuff isn't my strong point, and I'm not running a light. isn't there a. diagram i could go by or can anyone tell me what wire to run to acc?

yall correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the alt wire come out of the acc. side, go thru the charging lite and back to the alt? When the alt is charging it opens a ground inside making the lite go out. 2nd Is your pos ignition wire ran to the always hot supply lug on your key switch? Look closely. With EVERYTHING turned off, disconnect the neg side of your battery and put a test lite between the post and neg clamp. If the lite comes on youve got a short to your frame or something giving something stray voltage.(A pos touching negative somewhere).EX: burt out switch, armature laying on a stator on an electric motor or starter(because of bad bearrings), bad toggle switch or naked wires behind a lg switch.Wires melted to each other.A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.Voltmeters are great for finding breaks inside of wires , weak/good current and bad grounds.

the wire from switch thru lite to alt comes from ign terminal

the wire through the indacator light just excites the alternator once alt starts charging the circuit is broken and light goes out.

in an alternator setup the small wire is for excitation of the field. to understand what im about to say you must understand voltage flows from negative to positive. an alternator always has the same voltage at the big terminal 13.8- 14.5 with alternator turning the field just controls amperage. if battery voltage is lower than alternator voltage current will flow from the ignition to the the field terminal on the alternator, energizing the field causing current to flow to the battery thus charging it. if battery voltage is higher than alternator voltage (alternator is bad or not turning) enough current flows from the alternator to the batter to light the charge light. you can run a diode if your not running a light but that would just be stupid. the charge light is the first thing that tells you your belt flew off and your and your motor is about to meltdown.

i know this doesnt help but i just wanted to clear some things up. if you can post pics of you generator and voltage regulator ill try to find the proper wiring diagram and do my best to explain it to you.

yes holeman we all agree the wire goes to the ignition side of the switch IF your running a light. no light means no resistence which allows enough current to power the ignition with the switch off. I was simply offering a simple solution to his problem by hooking it up to the accesory side. the ign aand acc. terminals are two seperate circuits only combined when the switch is in full run position. when the key is turned off the ign. and acc. terminals are not connected allowing no voltage from the alternator to reach anything.

if you still have alternater from previous engine swap it and alt stand (they are different from gen to alt) to new eng.
