I have been reading alot of info on here and the web about subaru engines and It seems that the 2.2 is the way go. But was wondering what years worked the best and why? Thanks for the input!

'90-'94 legacy are the simplest wiring, and most abundantly available.

'95+ are OBD II, so the wiring is a bit more complicated (not too bad though), and will require a VSS signal, and will throw codes for more things (rear 02 sensor, and a few other little things that will not effect driveability). BUT, the OBD II ECUs are much smarter, so more power, better mileage, and they'll give you more information if there is a problem.

'97+ are interference motors, so a broken timing belt will probably mean major engine damage.

-'95 have hydraulic lash adjusters. they work fine, but heads with solid lifters flow better.

IMO, '96 is the way to go. best flowing heads, better ECU, but still non-interference. but anything -'00 will be the same basic design, and be just as tough. I'm currently building a '90 2.2 for a supercharger....
