tossin around a water cooled for my woods car. I'm thinkin suby. What is the best to go with without goin turbo? 2.5 dohc? If I was to go to a junkyard and get one and the wiring harness, how hard is it to "wire up"? I'm lookin to go cheap, the racebuggy takes most of my fun funds  Any other ideas? I don't really want to build another high dollar transaxle either (just a super-diff) so I don't want a big power motor. keep it under 200hp

This is a good table for figuring combos and hp potential.

when it comes to the wiring harness i strongly recomed enginewiring.com he dose grate work but you can check with KEP adpters not sure what its called but its a life size lay out and you put it on the ground and lay harnes on it and it shows what to do and its color coded ...

i would check and see what motors they have this for and pick one of them to be cheep about it

Eg33 and do your own harness,,you wont be disspaointed. If you got the jack,,pay enginewiring.com and get the ez30 or ez36. There is no replacement for displacement.

The eg33 is the 3.3 litre , 6 cylinder boxer that came in the 92-97 Subaru SVX. Google it,,it is a hot rod , way ahead of its time. By doing your own harness, I mean get the whole car and take out the harness and then do your own modifications. I enjoyed doing mine even though it is a bit demanding. I find this engine to be plenty of power strait out of the car bone stock. Make this a project that you dont mind being patient with. Otherwise hire it done and miss half the fun.,,good luck,,oh yea,,member Numbchux does the harness too and cheaper than enginewiring.com but he don't get on here much . Chime in Numbchux

Here is what I know the ej22 is 2.2, ej25 is 2.5, eg33 is 3.3,,but the older carbed ea81 is 1.8, an even odder is the ea71 is 1.6. a t on the end means turbo.

I agree with Firebug but if cheap is what you want then go 2.2 obdI. You cant get any cheaper than that. Buy the whole car for 200 or less and buy the adapter from kenedy and ask for the wireing schematics. I run one with delta cams in it and Im impressed, Stock six rib and bus joints, cheap rad from ebay. Less than a grand for reliabilty and power.

Well I only have a few trips on it so far, but havn't needed more then about half throttle to have enough power. That doesnt mean I don't punch it and fling md at times. Really seems to pis off the 4x4's when u crawl past them while they spin at the base of a hill. Not sure how many subies are floating around the junkyard but I seem to see mid 90's grand am GT's pretty often.

I just want to throw in one other thing to concider. OBD-1 is up to model year 1994, that makes it a 15 year old car. Unless you can luck out and find a couple of low mile, 70,000 or 80,000 is low, your pickings are getting slim. I would suggest going OBD-2, 2.5L SOHC or DOHC makes no difference as far as HP goes. That opens your availibility from 1995 to 2002 or beyond with additional mods.
My next planned major project is to swap from OBD-1 2.2L to OBD-2 2.5L SOHC.

Availability for one. Aftermarket parts are harder to find. The motor is longer and heavier, now with Baby Chains it's not an isue but for a regular suspension car it could be. With the additional weight and length, the HP differance isn't all that desirable IMO. Do a reflash and swap cams on a 2.5L and match the 3.3 HP without the added weight.
The last issue would be transmision, when you get into the 200Hp plus range the life expectancy starts to go down. How many Weddle'd up gear boxes do you want to do?
