How are guys running your exhaust?? I'm trying to figure the pipes out and I'm not sure which way to go. Any ideas? Oh please post pics.

Do you think header style exhaust would work with the fuel injection?

I used a Camco Fab Bombshell muffler for my exhaust. Mine was pretty easy since its turbo the exhaust manifold feeds the turbo and all I had to do was tie into the down tube off the turbo with a 3" 90 degree stainless elbow. From the elbow I just welded the bombshell muffler onto the pipe. A lot of guys out west run the bombshell mufflers welded directly to the header collector. I have no idea what they sound like or how loud they are since I haven't fired mine yet but I'm betting they would be pretty loud off a straight header. My turbo should quiet it down some. can you run open headers with a subie or will it hurt the motor

I don't think it would hurt as long as you have a decent length of tubing. You really need some backpressure but not much. The muffler I am using might as well be a straight header since its a straight through design with puched baffles around the inside.

"The need for back pressure is a myth" Roy what are you basing this on. If pipe size matters then in effect you are changing the back pressure in the engine. The smaller the pipe the greater the pressure drop thru it hence the greater the back pressure. The larger pipe would cause the oppoite effect. It is my understanding in order to maintain torque in the low and midrange RPMs you need back pressure so that you dont lose part of your intake charge out the exhaust hence losing power in that range. At the upper RPM range back pressure is less significat due to the high scavenging effect and in actuallity you want less backpressure because you will lose power in that range. For the offroad buggy I would think more back pressure is in your favor. Granted the cam has a lot to due with how much back pressure is required. Food for thought.

Well it depends on alot of things and what you are trying to accomplish. All I said was that the NEED for back pressure is a myth. You do not NEED back pressure. The orig. question was about not running a muffler.
Changing the tubing size does not create back pressure nor does it take it away.
What you really WANT to do is create a vacuum in the exhaust. That's why most of us use a merged system. This is what creates scavaging (vacuum) in the exhaust. Far cry from pressure in the exhaust.
The tubing size you choose should be based on the displacement (cc's) of the engine. The length of these tubes will change where your motor makes torque in the RPM range.

In theory, an engine with no backpressure will have more torque and more horsepower. The real reason for a motor with smaller pipes making more torque is because of the scavenging effect of the exhaust pulse. As the exhaust pulse moves through the pipes it is actually pulling the exhaust from the cylinder as the exhaust valve opens. ( think of it as syphoning). Backpressure will do nothing but slow down the piston from coming up on the exhaust stroke. I build and tune motorcycle race engines and I know this to be true. However there is really no way to build an engine with zero backpressure unless it doesn't have an exhaust. And even at that, you won't have good torque cause of the loss of "syphon".

Hey fortydegnorth, where did you get the stainless 3 inch elbow and do they have other sizes as well? I'm in the process of installing a Dodge 2.2L turbo engine in my buggy. Right now it just has a 2 1/2 inch straight pipe about 3 feet long and bent to fit my buggy. I got it running and it doesn't sound so good.

Dont know, I'm starting on electrical system tomorrow. Hope to start it soon. I need to find a high torque starter to start it. Hope it sounds like a v-dub.
