Trapped air turns to steam and water pumps do not pump steam. Your gauge can get fooled and yer big $ motor burns up. Rev the motor while you squeeze the upper return hose. It should be hot but more important it should swell. Warm air coming out of your radiator fan can be misleading also. This happens on lower mounted rads that sit for a week or so. A high mounted burp or air purge port is most important. Aluminum heads on cast iron blocks are more forgiving because when they cool they hold the aluminum head true, unlike an aluminum block. My baby chain buggy does it every sat morn.
