May be not the best choice, but Rabbit engines are cheap and easy to come by. The bottom ends are almost bullet proof, as they take the RPM. I chose this engine because I already had the thing when the air cooled calfed. This is actually a Fox engine. Fox, Rabbit, Jetta, GTI, 1.8 l. , same blocks that I know of. My question, what are the differences in these engines, ( heads, yes, but how) . I want to know what stock parts produce the best power, torque. Also want to know what the best up grades would be. The 2276 out powered this engine, but did n't have the RPM. |

Without low end torque a rpm engine is useless in a buggy. A 1.8 has an iron block with aluminum head. Look into an echo tech or Subie as they are lighter and produce more torque. IMHO. |

Price, availability and reliability is what I went for when I chose my quad4 too. I'm not sure about your engine specific questions but from how you described this engine I'm not so sure high rpms matter much. I guess it depends on what you plan to do with your buggy. IMO torque is more attractive. But then what do I know? I'm gonna run a big heavy 'government motors' engine. Maybe try looking for a fox engine specific forum for good hop up advice. good luck |

I race my buggy as well as run the mountains. The torque is ok, but the power band seems to be 5,000 RPM, plus. However, I usually have my foot in it. I ran the lower field the other day, we call it the swamp. Was running about 7,500 RPM, blew tips off 2 rotors, a hole in the cap and the pick up broke where it goes through the body of the dizzy. Drove it back to the shop. Next day a group of 4X4s went down there. They did n't get out till 2:30 in the morning. |
