Another thing I'm curious about. Most people have a A/C compressor laying on the floor after the water cooled conversion is over and it prolly goes in the trash. I've heard of trucks converting theirs (or adding another) to be used as an on- board air compressor for filling up tires out on the trail. Has anyone done this with their buggy? Seems like overkill when you could just use a 12V compressor but that would be one less thing to store/worry about. |

My brother used it for his airbags, He put a regulator on it and used pipe of frame for air tank. worked great. Don't know all the specifics but it worked. |

I seen a guy in a jeep do it lasted about five minutes and over heated and locked up..what ever he did was not right... |

modern ac compressors rely on oil in the refrigerant for lubrication. without it it WILL lock up. The old v-twin cast iron compressors used on chrysler products used a wet sump design. Thats what you need but they are VERY heavy and VERY bulky. |

Sure you get a little fuel vapor in the tire but it will get you back to camp. We used a compression gauge hose with a quick connect to a 10'-0" hose. my brother used the ac pump in his jeep for years. on the inlet he cut the hose and put a small filter on the end and used a oil drip from mcmaster carr to drip a little oil in it . then he used a switch from a air compressor and wired it to the clutch so it will turn the pump on and off with the air pressure he did not use a tank he just had a quick connect for the hose .i think that everyone in wellsville used it at one time or another he was always pumping up tires. he even made a potato gun out of 2"pipe and a ball valve and used the pump to pressurize it to shoot potatoes. it was funny he would drive around wellsville with the potato gun strap to his roof

Haha, Guy hooked me up with air from the Jeep more than once. That Jeep was in mint condition too. Not a scratch on it.

He has a compressor, quick connects front and rear, 3" x 1/4" wall tubing rock sliders that he uses as air tanks. He has to much $$$ rap up in his setup to justify it, but who am I to talk when I start adding up what I have spent the last 4 years on my buggy.

That's a pretty slick setup but I think I'm with Mike on this one. Seems like a 12v compressor that plugs into a power point would provide enough air. Get a little tank if you need volume. Running that compressor just robs horsepower.

It only robs horsepower while its engaged. When not in use its no more than an idler pulley. You could do this way simpler by using a simple air tool oiler meant to hook directly to an impact for example. Use a toggle switch to engage comp clutch on and off and just hook a hose to outlet of comp. Also not sure how much volume of air from ac comp but they can make lots of pressure. I have seen ac systems that were plugged peg a 350 psi gauge

Not to mention the extra weight hanging off the rear end! It's just something to yak about while drinking beers and staring at your buggy IMO. If the engine's running then you 'll have 12V to run a tire inflator. If you don't have 12V your prolly not gonna have a running engine either. But If your engine isn't running you might have the 12V which you might want to save to run the blender while the wife walks back to get help.
