Hi Guys
It's been awhile sinse my last post .
Haven't messed with the buggy in over a year because of financial and health reasons.
The last thing I did was to pull the 1.7 type 4 motor to rebuild.
But after collecting a lot of parts and having heads built I have decided to go water cooled .
I just can't decide which way to go ECOTEC or SUBARU.
Just so you will know I have a 4 seater trail rig with a bus 6 rib with german super diff that will tote a lot of weight like famly, canping gear and a heavy buggy. I am looking for reliability, power, longevity and also COST !!!
So I have read all of the water powered forum and still don't know which wat to go.
SUBARU OR ECOTEC
What's your opinion and WHY ????
Thanks
MoblMec
P.S. Will have a lot of type 4 parts to sell

Subaru 2.5
The EJ25D has demonstrated leaking head gasket issues on occasion. This was due to a design flaw of the OEM gaskets. Since the release of the EJ25D, an updated gasket is available that is not prone to failure. There were two variations of the EJ25D sold in the US market. The engine was introduced in 1996 in the Legacy 2.5GT, LSi, and Legacy Outback. That version of the engine used HLA heads, was recommended to be run on 91 octane fuel, had lower power and torque ratings than the later '97-99 EJ25D, and was only offered with an automatic transmission. In 1997 a revised engine was introduced that used heads with shimmed bucket lifters (versus the HLAs), was designed to run on 87 octane fuel, and was available with either a manual or automatic transmission.

DOHC (1996) - SAE - 155 hp (116 kW) @ 5600 rpm
140 ft·lbf (190 N·m) at 2800 rpm
DOHC (1997–1999) - SAE - 165 hp (123 kW) @ 5600 rpm
162 ft·lbf (220 N·m) at 4000 rpm

Not a huge jump in power in stock form. The Power curves I found I could not copy and paste, but they were higher torque at lower RPM's on the Eco's.

Now the Ecos seem to be an easier mod to put in a buggy. The eco I also believe is a lighter engine due to being aluminum. They don't need anything other then the harness changed. And the ECU re-flashed.

As for the Subys you have a boxer engine that is a lower center of gravity and shorter in length. But the oil pan needs modified and the exhaust and intake needs a little costom work. Nice thing on these is there is room to put the Radiator on the back of the engine.

Personally I like the eco for around here because they are much easier to find used and in junkyards.
Doesn't hurt that I am a GM fan either.

Both engines will require a Radiator and fuel injected fuel pump as well as adapter plate and wire harness work. Both also have a ton of after market mods available to increase power.

That is the best side by side I can come up with, they seem very similer in stock form, power wise.

You used capital letters to spell COST and if that is the determining factor then I would think the ECOTEC would be the choice. Around Western PA they are reasonable and easy to find and like Chevys they are the best value for the dollar spent. I'm not saying they are the bestus, fastest, greatest or whatever, but they are the most horsepower per dollar spent. One last thing to think about is the fact that the ECOTEC was designed by German engineers of the GM Opel division and everyone can appreciate German engineering.

Ecotec is light and more of them making parts dirt cheap also oil pick up isin the back so your not going to have to worry about oil pis like suby.
If you get a older one 03 to 06 I think there is to MAF.

If you want to turbo you can reflash the ecu you have and go no need to change out ecu's

The oil pan is really not that big of a deal with the suby. Took me a few hours to shorten the sump, I still put 5 quarts in it. I personally like the low end torque that the flat engines put out and the low center of gravity. Got my suby ej25 for less than $700 delivered with less than 35,000 miles on it. Mine is a newer one and it puts out 168-172 HP.

Thanks for the replys guys.
Sounds like Ecotec might be the way I go because of less mods to do and cost.
I was leaning towards subaru befor but sounds like the ecotec is the way to go.
Dose the ecotec stand a lot taller being a upright engine instead of a flat engine ?
Thanks

It is taller, around the same height as the tins on a VW.

The best thing about the ecotec. I think is the ability to upgrade and just reflash the stock computer.
