Not too sure I can tell you that.. Not for a race buggy any way.

It looks like I am around 400 over 500. I have a ton of spring boxes and those seem to be the heaviest. But with that boat ancor your running, you might need to run 800 over 1000s! hahaha!@!!

we got around to measuring all the oil clearences this weekend at sattlers dyno shop.

.0025 for the rods and .0035 for the mains

and we honed the wrist pin holes on the rods and pistons

and balanced the pistons

time to get the bottom end bolted up!

I bolted a rod on the crank and checked the side clearence and it is only .012-.013" . Sounds tight, but the book says it is good!

Can't wait to see it run !

Post subject:  Re: Suby build

I got the case bolted together last night. SOo much easier than a VW! No cam, lifters, timing, or anything else. Just stand on one side of the room and throw the crank across the room and into the block and tighten it up!!
ImageImage
Image
then you have to line up the rods and pistons up and push the wrist pin and clips through that little hole there... I cant wait!

This thing has about 5 times the parts that a air-cooled motor does!! I spent hours elbow deep in the parts washer this weekend. I did get the heads on it finally. Now I am waiting on the valve shim buckets before I can install the new cams and start screwing around with timing it.

got the motor in this weekend, but I'm still waiting on my valve shim buckets to show up before I can put the cams in. I also figured out several of my fuel lines are leaking after sitting for a few years. I figured them AN lines would be fine, but I guess not!

Update??????????????????

Author:  RaceBugg1098 [ Fri Apr 25, 2014 2:40 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Suby build

update is grass is growing, yard work crap and it took 3 weeks for the correct shims to arrive for the valves. I could have it running in a few hours, but am trying to degree in the variable cams so I don't have a little engine crash when they advance. Hope to have it done and ready for the dyno in a few weeks.

How are you controlling the AVLS? RPM trigger from the ECU? or are you using the stock ECU with a piggy back?

stand alone Hydra ems. The cam timing has its own map. Since it has never been on a dyno, i havent been able to play with it yet. The base map it has is for a turbo set-up so it barely did anything with just a vacuum reading.

Having a 15,000 original mile motor I decided to go with the stock ECU. 174HP should be plenty until the motor breaks in, another 15,000 mile or so. Playing with the idea of adding a supercharger

OH, if you need a test pilot, let me know. I can free up some time for ya. 8)

I am having a hell of a time getting the cams timed. since I had them welded and reground and had the heads milled, I cannot get the centerlines to match up. This is turning into a real pain!!

Author:  RaceBugg1098 [ Mon May 19, 2014 7:55 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Suby build

I finally got the cams all timed this weekend! I had to first time the intake cams in there static position, then advance them to my projected position and check piston to valve clearance. These things will advance 30 cam degrees (that 60 crank degrees)! That will lead to an engine crash! I had to figure out what my max advance was and make stops for the variable pulleys. that only took a few tries

Image
I had to keep making spacers and then re-time it and chack the centerline and clearance
