Hmmm.. You could swap out for an AC engine... Then you can troubleshoot the problem..

I had that problem on the passat. Found out I had was only running 1 o2 sensor causing the plugs to start fuel fouling at only 30 hours. The more you go wrong the more you go right. The more you learn this fuel injection the better you feel. The computor takes an average of the two o2 sensors . If you only have 1 what can it average? Take the wires of the dangling o2 and wire them to the one o2 sensor.I have not done that yet but I learned it from some guys today.(I'd rather just weld a nut in my exaust and run another o2).Bounce around all information and this water cooled fuel injection will be fun. Then you will realize a cave man can do carburetors.Had a "all that guy" say today "Oh computers can't handle water!" I said negitive "I cross the Cahaba river 4 times a day. NO MISS EVER!. Got the computer in an ole air tite ammo box.Change the plugs and you will know it is a fouling problem.Oh and run some plain ngk's.They are more forgiving with what we are doing.Past that, the magnetic crank position sensor picks up metal particles from a worn engine.Pull it out and wipe it off.Dirty air filters can confuse your maf sensor. Oh and keep your maf sensor sprayed off with maf cleaner only! From Auto zone..The rpm on my passat VR6 is violent.Anybody got any grief with this post call (205)369-7406. Thanks

I would check the signal wire continuity between the coil, igniter and ECU. then look at replacing the igniter itself.
