Post subject:  is it imporant to leave tin on or not

i am putting my buggies back together and the tin shroud that cover at air cooled fins were caked with mud rocks can i remove them an run it open to help keep it cool and easier to clean even in the creek if theirs mud i think it would keep more air flow am i wrong to do that :?:

Leave the tins ON !,they help direct air from the fan to cool the engine. also,as a rule,,you dont want to get in so much mud that the fins on the jugs get caked. that will def. shorten the life of your engine. those fins on the jugs help get rid of heat and if their covered in mud it wont be able too..I try not to run in the mud/water no more than i have too. it might be fun to do some muddin,,but the clean up thats required makes it not worth it. just my 2 cents.

there's a small tin deflector that goes under the cylinders that is very important as well.

Thats right. They definately ARE important. I think they call them "cool tins". Without them the air from the fan just blows right between the cylinders instead or circulating around them. Will burn up a hopped up motor in a hurry with out them. About like driving momma's station wagon without a waterpump. :D
