Post subject:  Trailer with a tent?

I currently have a 7 x 16 tandem axle trailer with side rails on it that I haul my buggy on. Been looking at toy haulers but just dont want to spend the money. Thinking along the lines of a heavy canvas tarp cover with support poles, creating some kind of tent structure. Have a generator to put on the front of the trailer and have the buggy loaded on the back to balance it out. My idea is to pull into camp, unload the buggy, drag the tarp over the tube frame on the trailer, and be done. Whatcha think?

I have seen this before on a Gooseneck trailer. I talked to the guy. He said it worked great.
Just letting you know.

Do you happen to have a picture of the setup?

No I do not If I see him down in Harlen again I will get one for you. They would show moves and the picture taken for the day on the side of the tent at night with a projector.

bolt a pop up camper on the front

I have a super small pop-up camper bolted on the front of my trailer and it works great. My trailer is only 13 feet long so I had to build some ramps for the front of the buggy to go on top of the pop-up.

I will see if I can find some pics.

Here are some pics of my set-up. Since I normally travel with my daughter, I wanted something a little protective than a tent but I could not carry the weight of a real camper. This is my compromise...

How does it pull with the Jeep? Is the trailer fairly well balanced with the front of the buggy up in the air like that?

Its a Jeep.. So it pulls like crap.. I do not have any issues with the balance. The trailer and buggy track fine. My biggest problem is just lack of power. The Jeep is only rated to pull 3500 lbs..

Buggy (1500 lbs) + Camper (500 lbs) + Trailer (700 lbs) + Extra stuff (300 lbs) = 3000+ lbs

The Jeep and trailer will go 75 on a flat highway but it will slow down if there is any type of hill..

I really like having the camper rather than a tent. It is easy and fast to set-up and I get much better protection. We have camped in huge down pours without any issues. With a fan, we stay cool in the summer and a small propane heater keeps us warm in the winter.

During one trip to lbl, a bunch of the kids went in the camper to play cards during a storm.

David Hill makes a set up just like this. there is a few around Ga, that he has made. Give him a call. He also makes the straps we all use at D&K.

If you were interested in adding a pop-up camper to a flat trailer, this one might work better than mine.

http://www.evergreenoffroadcampers.com/ It looks smaller and lighter than mine but still has a lot of room.

I bought mine fromhttp://www.livinlite.com

Thanks for the replies. Some of the links seem to be a bit far to travel for a project. Anyways, I have been looking and reading and may have settle on an idea. 7 x 16 trailer, first 2 1/2' for a generator, couple of batteries, and an inverter. Next 12' for a vinyl coated canvas tent 6' tall with a peak of 7' in the center. A storage box inside the tent toward the generator end to keep the tent in when not in use and to use as a sleeping platform when the tent is set up. The last 1 1/2' to use as a place to remove muddy boots or to set coolers. When time to go, the tent and some pf the camping gear go into the storage box, the buggy front end sits on the box and all is well. Similar to MM's without the popup but with a box.

If you can handle the tow weight a enclosed trailer maskes a good little camper setup once you pull out the buggy. Ricks got a nice setup with a queen-size bed you drive under. It's my plan once I get a job again, lol.

I have looked at the slide in camper idea. However, this seems to be the wrong time to be trying to buy one on the cheap side, being deer season and all. This project will be fully underway around January. Rebuilding my tranny will take what free time I have until after Christmas. Which should be a good time to look for a slide in or a cheap small popup. Thanks for the pics and ideas.

That was my original plan but my jeep could not pull the weight. So I had to find a super light pop-up. The little pop-up on the front of my trailer only weighs 500 lbs..

With the Jeep it's perfect. I like it, I just like the speed of tear down and setup with an enclosed. Though it sounds like yours goes up pretty fast.
