Around here i've always heard them called a stick-o-matic, i've seen a few post lately on auto-sticks, this maybe the same thing. What ever you call it you start it up and change gears with the clutch but the rest of the time you don't have to use the clutch, you can stop with it in gear then pull back out. I've seen them run plenty, i know at least bruce1 has one in his wifes buggy. My question was what are they out of, are they out of a bus or a car. i know you need probably the bell housing, converter, flexplate, and different oil pump maybe, what else??? and can you put them on any bus transmission??? thanks in advance. dustin

You need a semiautomatic from a beetle (also called autostick). Can be mated to any bus tranny. Will also need a 4 puck disc and heavy pressure plate to be turned down to replace the internal clutch of the autostick.
Bruce has the the phone numbers you need.
It is a sweet setup for trail riding.

Any idea on a rough price to convert a good 6 rib to this?

The adapter costs right at $500 new.

Need the whole thing. They gotta cut it down. If you find one in a car with the engine still in it, get the oil pump and tranny fluid reservoir too.
You can run a seperate pump instead of the oil/tranny pump from the beetle, like a gm steering pump or something, but you will have to buy a regulator for the tranny fluid pressure.

Gearing is same as whichever bus tranny you mate them to. Autostick components (torque convertor and internal clutch) basically replace the clutch assembly of the manual tranny.
Dont know how much HP they are capable of handling.

Ok, I missunderstood when you said you needed the whole thing. Meaning using it as it came out of the car.

Its pretty cool how it works.
The guy who came up with it must be slicker'n snot on a doorknob.

They actually cut the autostick housing in half (more like front third) and mate it to a 3,5,6 rib with no bell on it.

i always thought they were pretty cool for trail riding. we had a guy down here who ran one with a six rib with a first gear climbing gear matted to a hot 2276 with like 12 : 1 compression. they say it does rob some hp though.

The better housings are made from Billet Aluminum. I was told they work better than the ones that are cut in half. That is what I put on Angela’s buggy. It works great for her; she goes any where she wants t go. HP?? Well hers is a 2332 that is pretty hot also, and we have had no problems. Parts that are used from the Auto Stick are The Bell Housing (I guess that is what it is called, it is what holds the torque converter and internal clutch) Then the adaptor is installed to a 3, 5, or6 rib. And it all bolts together. They put different seals in the Torque converter, and the clutch is different. (it is cut down & the center changed) I bought all the parts for hers for $600.00 then paid Larry in Harriman Tn at the speed shop, $600.00 to put the new seals in, and some other parts and install it all. So far it is the best money I ever spent for her buggy.

They are geared wrong for buggys, I think they are just 3 speeds. Most of the time you can buy a whole auto stick for $100.00 with all parts.

My wife had never driven a straight shift ever, so I knew it was going to be near imposable to teach her in the woods, (like starting on hills). So what did I do??? Went and bought a $10,000.00 rock truck. Well she hated it felt like she was flipping all the time (sits too high). So I was like I guess I will keep driving the 2 seater when she wants to ride. Then I meet a guy at D&K that has one in his buggy and It look like it was the SHIT. And it is, he did have a log in on this site but I have not seen David on hear and a long time. He is very smart on these things also. But I do have David to say thanks too. Now my wife can go anywhere she needs to go in a buggy. And loves it!!!!

Yes, you only have to use the clutch to shift gears. For example, rollin down the trail in 1st and ready for second, you do have to use the clutch to shift. Or to go int reverse, etc. You just push in the clutch, and pop it in gear to take off, but you can just sit there holding the brake with it in gear like a regular ol' automatic. You can stop without touching the clutch, so it's perfect if you don't like stopping and starting on hills, and using the clutch while holding a brake and everything. It's about the coolest thing there ever was. :D

Why would a full auto not be just as good,,,,is it only the gearing that would be bad? Would a full auto and external gear reduction be just as good and even better because no clutch is needed? Full auto would start out in low gear to get you going and change to more wheel speed ,,,then down shift if needed.
