ok im going to take a stab at this and see if i get it right,,,,,what is the strongest ring & pinion to the weakest and what did they come factory in? also is it correct that the actual 1st - 4th gear ratios themselves are the same for the 3, 5, and 6 rib trannys and that it is only the ring & pinions that are different ratio wise?

1) 4.57 ------ 6 rib

2) 4.86 ------ 5 rib

3) 5.42 ------ 3, 5, and 6 rib

4) 5.38 ------ 3 rib

somebody correct me if im wrong and im sure some of it is :|

i dont know if it is possible without compromising some strength somewhere but using a stock ring & pinion and weddle gears i would like a to get a 6 rib geared so that 1st was like a 5.38 1st and so that 2nd - 4th is like a 5.42 2nd - 4th?

if not what would be my best compromise?

4.57 is the strongest..5.38 the weakest. 5.42 is stronger than the 5.38 and maybe somewhere close to the 4.86, but the lower the ratio, it is inherently weaker if the same material and geometry is used.
The gear ratios (1st through 4th) are similar. some have 3.78 for first and some had 3.80..not much difference. 2nd was almost always the same..2.06 as well as 3rd 1.26. There were various 4th gear ratios...85, .89, .93, .82 etc. depending on what trans it was.

It is not possible to get a 2nd gear low enough using a 4.57 R&P to climb really bad stuff in, imo. I think the lowest 2nd available is a 2.46. One way to figure gears is to use the final drive ratio..that is multiply a gear by the R&P ratio. A stock 6-rib with a 4.57 R&P has a 2.06 2nd gear. Multiply this and you get 9.42. In other words it takes 9.42 turns of the input shaft to turn the wheels once (in 2nd gear). You can do this for any gear to figure out what you want. I have a 3.11 1st with the 4.57 R&P..that is a FDR of 14.21 Again, the lwest 2nd gear available is 2.46. If you multiply that you get 11.24. If you multiply a 5.42 R&P by 2.46, you get 13.32.. which works. Bottom line is if you want a 2nd gear trans, you have to use the weaker 5.42 R&P.

Correct me if I am wrong But the 3 rib bus tranny built for the mountains of Germany had a 5.42 R&P instead of a 5.38 R&P some were imported over here they were weak .Then came the 5.42 out of a Diesel Vanagon it was the size of the 091 4.57 just diffrent teeth but stronger than the three rib one

I don't know that, but I did have an early sideshift with a 5.42, so that kinda sounds right.

whats bigger?

the reason im asking is because i do know that a 091 ring gear will bolt to a 002 diff, and vice versa if im not mistaken

I've got both, and if memory serves me right they are the same, as far as pinion and ring teeth goes.
Eric will know for sure.

I tried a 5.86 once, broke the pinion in half on an easy hill.
Towd back to the parking lot in disgrace by two 4 wheelers.

I wish I could find some sort of trans info sheet as to factory improvements as to what and when. Other than just rib count or ring and pinion changes. I have a 5 rib with a shot reverse and another used one yet to try. 6 ribs are totally scarce and very pricy if you can find one.

Philip. You have a gold mine over there with the side shifts. There is a bloke over there named Thomas hurley who would round up all types of gear boxes for me.My son has a 5 speed in his buggy from there with a 411 first and a 233 second. With a 483 RnP (crown wheel).
