I found a 1983 vanagon, It is manual shift. I looked under it, an it looks like a 6 rib. Does anyone know for sure?

Engine still in it?
Air or water cooled?
Early 83 was air, late was water IIRC.
Big difference in trannies.
Both have the 6 rib "look".

I pulled a 6 rib sideshift from a 03/1983 vanagon and it was watercooled

That 6 rib NOSE side shift is a 457 2 spyder diff, and the 3 rib is a 542 2 spyder. Both pictured are from 80- early 83. Your trans code is located on the bottom corner on the driver's side. They are such codes as ab, abd, dk, acw etc. Go to a british site WWW.partsemporium.co.uk. Then look under type 25 gearbox codes.(vanagon).Then get rid off it and get a front wheel drive motor and trans ran longways to a ford continental irs diff.Preferably a v6 sitting in the back of a 4 seater frame. The Pull a Parts are full of $75 nissan toyota etc transmissions.Oh yeah, Columbus said the world is round. For an expensive idea, go to woodsbuggy forum then under TRANSMISSIONS go to mystery machine.Dave out.

That is considered late.
Model year starts the previous year in August.
Your March vanagon was 7 months into the 83 model year.
