Has anyone used an 002 bell housing on an 091 vanagon trans? I would prefer not to have to buy another new starter considering mine is new. I realize the 091 housing is stronger but by how much. The only other problem I might see is the main shaft length.

You can do it but it will change the overall length of the trans. It makes it shorter which screws up the mounting.if you really don't want to buy another starter you could have the starter mounting surface on the bell housing machined down to the same thickness as an 002 bell housing.

I thought about maching the boss down to fit the starter. I have not looked at the bell housing close enough to see if there will be enough meat left to still be strong enough. does it effect anything else? Do you know how much has to be milled off. I have a bridge do do the work.

I think you have to take off .23 inches. It has been done by hundreds of people with good results.

I will not be making the trip on LD to Harlan. I got free tickets to the race in Bristol next weekend and we are driving the RV up there. There goes all my extra money for the month. :?
