Yea thats what i run.alot of people around here run 3.44 1st and 2.36 2nd with stock 4.56 ring gear.i have to take off in 1st and then hit 2nd. well now with my new 2387 i can take off in 2nd as long as its pretty smooth at the bottom.i know a few of the guys are getting ready to switch to 3.10 1st and 2.46 2nd.

Typical stock 6 rib ratios are 1/2 - 3.78/2.06 M/S 3 - 1.26 and 4 - .86

What diameter tires are you running? Mine are 33" (actual 32") Does it lug at slow speeds?

I find that stock 1st gear winds out to quickly and 2nd needs more wheel speed to work. Hense I need closer ratios.

All depends on power to weight ratio. Less HP benifits from 3 or a 5 rib ratios. large HP motors work better on the 6 rib ratios. I have a few ponys in my motor and I can use the higher gears.

What ring gear are you runnin Ody? The reason I ask is I am tryin to decide whether to go with the 3.11/2.17 or the 3.44/2.36. I am runnin the 4.83 ring gear. Right now my first is way to low and second is just a little to high. I wish they made a 3.11/2.36 for the midshift. I think I will be able to climb in second with the 2.36. I just wish I knew for sure. That is alot of money to gamble with.

I have the 3.11/2.36 and run a 4.86 r/p and I run in second gear but remember I also have 1.5/1 reduction in my babychains. I dont think it would work without the chains reduction , even with the 230 hp. I think you would still have a first gear tranny.

Terry, I believe your running the same trans I am with the 4.83 R&P I am runninmg 32" dia Boggers. What tires are you running? I am experiencing the same senario as you. I would not go 3.11 at all if your into tight woods running. A 3.44 would be the minimum. I am deciding between the 3.44/2.36 and the 3.75/2.36. I would like to have a 2.46 second however its not offered for the Midshift .

Ody, you will like the 3.44 first and 2.36 second gears that's what I have now but my second is 2.46. You can lug around just fine I mostly lug around in 2nd gear and I have a 2276cc and you got a turbo-charged suby engine I mostly use first just to climb hills and to lug slowly up some hills. You will not regret using this gearset even though you got a midshifter with a lower ring and pinion and taller tires than mine, it will pretty much be the same as mine.

Right now I am running firestone v treads which are actually 28"tall. I have the power and torque to climb in second I just cannot get it to spin on command at lower rpm's in 2nd. It just hooks and goes. Which leads to me hitting a tree or something. I want to be able to spin the tires on command. I don't know I have been racking my brain on this for the past two days, it is driving me absolutely insane. Ody after watching these guy's with the 3.44 I think it will be fine even if it is tight woods.

Firebug with you running the 1.5 to 1 reduction that should make your r/p 7.29 I think, and you are running 35" tires. If I am right your 2nd gear at 7000 rpm is 42 mph. Here is the equation I used rpm x tire /gear ratio / ring gear / 336 = mph
Mine with the 2.36 2nd and 4.83 at 7000 rpm will be 51 mph. And at 6000 rpm I will be at 44 mph. I am making pretty good power and tq between 4500 rpm and 6000 rpm. And the 3.11 at 7000 rpm on mine will be 38 mph. Which I don't think is fast enough. Someone please help me decide. (ky boys)

I am having to learn how to drive. My buggy is too heavy to spin on command so I am trying to climb with traction. My gear ratios may not work for a lighter buggy. :?

Yeah, I know what you mean firebug. I really need to learn how to drive. I would like to hear the secret ky gearing. If I can hit a long hill after having my motor spun up to 3500 in 2nd I can get it to spin by playing with the throttle in second right now. But I just don't know if 2.36 will be enough for short hills,I wish I could get a 2.90 first. I think that would be perfect for hill climbing. Or a 2.90 second

Gear ratios are just like cams. It depends on you buggy, will your motor pull it?? is you buggy heavy?? what kind of driving do you do?? A good trany builder takes all this into consideration if you ask them what gears do I need?

And remember some gear ratios are not very strong. (the teeth are thin) So when you pick these kind, if you hammer on them often you could break them easy.

Its ok Koko, it still moves plenty fast. Its more like the buggies in the Baja 1000 then a KY hillclimber. Hopefully you and pops can show up to wellsville this year and see some of these heavy buggies.
