I just upgraded my tranny to a used 6 rib and I am having two issues.

My first issue is shifting into 3rd gear. When I shift into 3rd, it always grinds and I have to go way over and up to get it into 3rd. It almost feels like I have to hook 3rd gear. I am thinking this might be corrected by adjusting my shifter.

My second issue is the noise coming from the transmission when I am in 3rd or 4th gear. The tranny has a terrible whinnying when under load in 3rd or 4th. When coasting, there is no noise. Any Ideas?

As always,
Thanks

I'd tear it down and have a look, before it is totaled.
3rd most likely syncronizer or broke 3-4 hub.
With the whinning it all could be caused by a bad bearing or bearings.
If you shift pattern is real wide you probably have a worn out hockey stick shift ball.
Whinning=tear it down.

That is what I figured... If I do a rebuild, what gearing would you recommend. My tires are around 33 inches and I have a 2276.

I was thinking of running a 4.86 with the following ratio..
1st - 3.78
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.26
4th - .88

Those are essentially stock ratios and are what I am running in my car with 4.83 R&P and 33" tires . I find that 1st winds out to quickly and second tends to lug unless on the Rs. I would opt for a 2.46 on second. You can buy a 3.75 or a 3.44 for 1st thru Weddle.

After talking to the Transmission expert (Aka. Chuck Jones).. I have decided to replace the mainshaft bearing and see if that solves my immediate problem before rebuilding the entire tranny. I just ordered a new mainshaft bearing, nose cone bearing and a new hockey stick.

It looks like I will be keeping stock gears for awhile.

Get a steel shift ball for the hockey stick too.
