If you push the clutch and the gears grind and won't go in gear it is because the flywheel has rusted to the clutch.Probably been sitting too long in the rain? Crank motor while in 1st with one rear wheel floor jacked. At idle, have someone release floor jack and when the spinning wheel hits the ground the clutch and flywheel will break loose.Same with too much grease getting hot and oozing out of gland nut and glueing pressure plate to flywheel. If only 4th gear changes (becuase it is nearly 1:1) , you will know this is your problem.Hey, I read it in a vw book once, but it said to remove the motor. :o

Sounds like my old tractor, if it has been settin too long, I have to crank it in gear and ride it around with the clutch pushed in while stomping the brakes trying to get the clutch to release [break free=disk rusted to flywheel].
