Post subject:  vanagon vs 091

Hello all,

I am currently building a buggy and am trying to tradeoff the +/- of transaxles. I currently have a 1400lb 2 seater with 1600cc vw and type 1 swing. I have been looking at a built trans from rancho but trying to save as much $$ as possible. In the future I am wanting a Subaru 2.0 or 2.5, so I dont want to have to rebuild the trans then to hold the power.

I was currious if the vanagon trans (any specific year) was stronger than the 091. I have read the reverse is stronger, and its harder to install. With the shift adapter cost, would it be worth the price to get a 094 instead of an 091?

Thanks

Several different Vanagon water cooled trannys too.
Ultimate for stock would be an ACW code.
4:83 R&P but with a 4 spider diff from the factory.
Not sure about the other codes.

I've got customers running 2500cc 48IDF engines on stock 091/1 Vanagon trannies with no issue.
All depends on how you ride.
Also have had a guy tear up a 091 6 rib with a wore out 1600cc single port too.

I am currently running a 1984 Vanagon mid shift in my 2500 cc Subaru Turbo buggy with stock gears and a superdiff. Even with the shift linkage conversion its still the best way to go. Also to clraify the Vanagons still are 091 4 speed trans. The 094 is a 5 speed.
