I agree, unless you are talkin about gravel roads. You might get in a spot or two that you have to crack on it to get out of 'em. Never know what can happen even trail riding. |

The more power you have the more stress on the Trans. The heavyer the Buggy the more stress on the Trans. The larger the tires the more stress on the Trans. The harder the trail the more stress on the Trans. The deeper the Mud the more stress on the Trans. The steeper the hill the more stress on the Trans. If you experience any one of these Items then get a Super diff. Look at it as cheap Insurance. |

You reuse your ring and pinion gears on the Super diff. I went with a used German super diff in mine. It was around 200 Bucks. |

That kind of money I could handel. Are they hard to install? I have installed spider gears and lock rite lockers on a jeep befor but when it came to setting up ring & pinnon and blue printing for backlash I used a pro to set it up. Where would you look for a used super diff? Thanks MoblMec |

Because you have allready delt with the Jeeps you should not have any problem doing it. I set the backlash to .003" with a dial Indicator. It does require a special tool to get the bearing retainer rings off. You can make or buy one. |

I did n't realize that there were OEM German super diffs. Are they only aftermarket or were they used in production? I've seen Chinese ones advertised in Hot VW's for around $200 with out spider gears. The 9 tooth spiders never seem to be listed in the advertising. Would they be special order from some one like Weddel? I plan on getting one, but hav'nt finnish building my buggy yet. I want to run it for a while first, so I can decide wether or not to change gearing at the same time. Thank's Dave W. |

Yes, some late vanagons came with 4spider diffs .Don't think much of the chinese ones, only one I had experience with needed remachining before installation. Weedle has them sometimes. |

You say some late model Vanagons. Can you narrow that down some. Right now I plan to use a 5 rib, I've had the nose cone machined so that I can use a bearing retaining plate, installed new output shaft seal and added heavy duty cross shaft. I do have a 6 rib side shift. But when I found it there was no bell housing and it seemed that some one had tried to remove the carier housing but had damaged the main bearing race. It might be junk( a trans jig) or it may be rebuildable, don't know. If I could find one, would you recomend converting to nose cone style shifting, or would you recomend a cable shifter? If so, what style or brand? Thank's, Dave W. |
