I ripped a 930 boot that’s only been on the car for this season. The inner part of the boot I usually don’t zip tie but the boots I have seamed to be too loose, so I put zip ties on them but not too tight. I’m not sure what caused the rip but I’m wondering what boots are best quality so I get more than 1 season out of them and don’t need to zip tie them to the axle. Also what brand names last?

Thanks, Brad

This is the type I'm running now but not sure on what brand.

Are these better for off-road?

My 2 seater has the ones at the top, they have been on it for 4 or 5 years now.

Hmmm! If the boot requires a clamp put it on. Mine have come off with a clamp so with out them, they will surely fall off. The only exception I would see is a stock travel setup were your not pulling up or down on the boots at full travel.

If Tim says to do it that way, you can pretty much bank on it that it will work that way.

Cant always go by what "is required", most parts engineers dont ride woodsbuggies.

I think its a good idea to ziptie the big end so its held over the joint a lil bit but nothing on the other end so it can slide up n down on the axle as it plunges and retracts, then there is less chance to bind and the rubber is not constantly being "worked" to make it brittle quicker. Do what you want, but thats what works for me 8)

If you don't zip tie them, be really carful about water gettin in. I have ruined a set of 930's that way. The water gets in and eats the hell out of those ball tracks while it sitting.

On my type 4 cv's I never zip tied the small end. The 930 boots I had to because the small end was very loose. I only snugged them up a little. I wonder if the old boots were made for a bigger diameter axle.

i have been using the ones in bottom pic with no ties on either end and they do pretty good except occassionally the end over the c.v. joint will come off if a stick or something of the sort hit it

however i am in the process this week of fixing busted spider gears and are changing over to the ones in the top pic while axles are loose because im tired of the greasy cv bolts and i know people that run these also and never have any trouble with them either

I only clamp the CV end. I agree that the axel end needs to float.

I use a zip tie on the small end just tight enough to seal it.
